Mamelodi Sundowns U-17 team steam-rollered their way to a third victory in the Gothia Cup in China, and top the log with nine points in their age-group tournament which features five other teams from other parts of the world.
Since arriving in Shenyang, China as 2016 Future Champions, having beaten Orlando Pirates 3 – 0 in the final, Godfrey Sapula’s boys have beaten Kinetic Academy 2 – 0, Tokyo Verdi 2 – 1 and ACBB Paris 2 – 1. They now have to play Hongyon, who are currently bottom of the log having lost all three of their games so far, and BK Hacken, previous World Youth Cup winners.
Against ACBB Paris, it was Boitumelo Pheko and Notha Ngcobo who netted for the young Brazillians, setting the side firmly on the path to the finals.
The tournament started at the weekend, and about 125 games are played each day at the Gothia Cup Football Park. The games are played between 8-11 and 15-18. The break in the middle of the day is due to the warm weather.
More than 250 teams in different age groups played their first games. Gothia Cup Football Park, which has 40 artificial fields.
The finals will be played on Friday.
Head of Academy Shawn Bishop, was full of praise for the boys, pointing out that for many of them, it was their first trip abroad. “It is an essential part of their development cycle in getting to lay teams from other countries,” he said.
