2016 was a watershed year for Mamelodi Sundowns and for South African football.
Mamelodi Sundowns has already made football history in South Africa by winning the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title seven times after being crowned the PSL 2015/2016 winners in May this year.
The Club also won the CAF Champions League for the first time on 23 October 2016 after beating Egyptian giants Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate.
Mamelodi Sundowns is honoured to be the first South African Club to take part in the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup where they will represent Africa.
Over the past few years the Club has seen many top international coaches take the helm like Angel Cappa, Hristo Stoichkov, Oscar Fullone, Johan Neeskens and Henri Michel and the club is forever indebted to these coaches as well as the other coaches to have coached Mamelodi Sundowns.
What made many South Africans and Africans proud is that an All- South African technical team, under the stewardship of former South African national team coach, Pitso Mosimane, achieved the momentous victory of the 2016 CAF Champions League.
The future for South African and African football looks bright. The Mamelodi Sundowns under-17 squad recently won the Gothia Cup played in China and finished as runners up in the J-League u-17 Cup played in Japan.
I would like to express my personal gratitude to the PSL of South Africa, the South African Football Association and the leadership and administration of CAF.
Our first democratic President, Nelson Mandela, spoke about the power of football to bring people of different cultures, languages, backgrounds and races together.
We witnessed the power of this beautiful game on 20 June 2007 when Mamelodi Sundowns hosted La Liga giants FC Barcelona in South Africa and 60,000 football lovers from different races, cultures and backgrounds filled the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria and another 30,000 spectators were outside the stadium and could not be accommodated in the stadium.
We are honoured and extremely excited to be participating in the FIFA Club World Cup 2016 and wish all the other clubs who are participating in this competition everything of the very best.
Patrice Motsepe
