Saturday was an action-packed day for Mamelodi Sundowns with the first team, ladies team and Diski team all in action competing in high-stakes games.
The morning started with the DStv Diski team vying for a place in the final of this year’s rewired competition. The boys continued to show their resilience in this year’s tournament when they beat Cape Town City 3-2 in the semi finals on Saturday at Makhulong stadium.
Long-range strikes from Siyanda Nyanga and Musawenkosi Mdhluli gave the team a lead going into the halftime break. A second-half goal from Simnikiwe Mbonde sealed the thrilling competition and put the team into their third final of the tournament. Nyanga was also awarded Man of the match for his outstanding performance in the five-goal thriller encounter.
The Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies team sealed a great victory over Thunderbirds Ladies, scoring four fantastic goals in the Hollywoodbets Super League clash at Groenkloof stadium and maintaining their incredible unbeaten run this season.
Downs forward Lelona Daweti cracked the opener just before the half time break to give her team a head start in the match. Second-half goals were scored by Agnes Nkosi, Chantelle Esau and Thembelihle Masibi who all came from the bench to help their team secure the win over the coastal side. The dominant Masandawana performance which was full of pace and grit took the Ladies top of the Women’s football competition log and left them as the only side to have not dropped a single point this season.
Coach Jerry Tshabalala was made to contend with a number of injuries to his players however, he was confident in the depth that his squad possessed.
“During the week we had good preparations, though we got a couple of new injuries. I [was] not worried about that because we’ve got depth this season into the team, the depth that we’ve got gives us a good chance to make changes into the team.” said Coach Jerry Tshabalala ahead of kick off.
The headline act of the day took place at the Lucas Moripe Stadium where the men’s team took on Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the quarter-final second leg. Despite putting on a display full of character and determination, The Brazilians were only able to draw 1-1 on the day, ultimately being knocked out losing 3-1 on aggregate.
The action does not stop here with all three teams in action this week. The first team plays rivals SuperSport United in the DStv Premiership this Wednesday where they will be looking to take the steps towards securing the title. Both the Ladies and Diski teams will be involved in action this weekend with the reserve side looking to secure silverware and the ladies looking to extend their perfect start.
