Affonso Is A Downs Player!

Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed terms with striker Mauricio Affonso and the Uruguayan has already joined his new club for their pre-season camp.

The 27-year-old becomes our first recruit ahead of the upcoming 2019/20 season and has signed a five-year deal at Chloorkop.

Born in Melo, which is north-east of his native country Uruguay, Affonso stands at a height of 1.92m and has also played his football in Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Peru as well as Venezuela in South America.

Prior to him joining Sundowns, Affonso was playing for Club Alianza Lima – the oldest side in the Peruvian First Division.

He will add to coach Pitso Mosimane’s attack next season as the Absa Premiership reigning champions look for a repeat of the previous campaign’s heroics. Affonso joins fellow countryman Gaston Sirino, who arrived in South African in January last year and has taken the Premier Soccer League by storm.

Affonso has managed a career total of 34 goals in 117 games and will want to add to that tally as he makes a fresh start with Masandawana. He knows what it takes to win championships having twice helped Penarol win the title in the Uruguayan topflight in back-to-back seasons. The club was first crowned champions in 2016 and then the following season again as they dominated the Liga Profesional de Primera Division.

The player caught up with coach Mosimane today as he signed his new contract and joined his teammates at their Mbombela camp as the mentor takes his charges through their paces for the forthcoming campaign.

The new season kicks off early next month and Sundowns fans will be hoping to see just what their new forward can do under the watchful eye of coach Mosimane, who has guided the Brazilians to four league titles since his arrival in December 2012. Sundowns are also returning the CAF Champions League.
