Coach Shawn Bishop, a revered figure at Mamelodi Sundowns, has bid farewell to the club after a remarkable tenure spanning over a decade. With an illustrious career filled with notable accomplishments, Bishop has decided to embark on a new adventure in Portugal, where he aims to continue his journey in the world of football.
Since joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2011, Coach Shawn has been an instrumental force within the technical program, overseeing the Elite Players Program and Women’s Program as the Head of Technical Program. His contributions to the Club’s success are undeniable, leaving an indelible mark on the team and its players.
As an Assistant Coach for the MultiChoice Team (Reserve Team), Bishop played a pivotal role in guiding the squad to impressive achievements. Under his tutelage, the team clinched the coveted PSL Reserve League title in the 2017/2018 season, showcasing Bishop’s exceptional coaching prowess.
Bishop’s impact extended beyond the reserve team, as he also served as the Head Coach for the ABC Motsepe League Team (M Tigers) in 2017. Despite facing various challenges, Bishop’s leadership skills shone through, helping the team finish 10th in the league with academy players before transitioning to the national 3rd Division with the promoted players.
Furthermore, Bishop’s influence on the Sundowns’ academy cannot be understated. As the Head of Academy & Methodology, he spearheaded the implementation and development of individual programs for the elite players. He fostered a culture of excellence and growth, ensuring a seamless integration of national team players within the Club’s structures.
Bishop’s commitment to nurturing talent was evident through his involvement in the South African Football Association (SAFA). Serving as the national U17 Assistant Coach and national U20 Assistant Coach & Performance Analyst, he contributed to the success of various national teams within the country, including a silver medal at the Under-17 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2015.
Beyond his coaching responsibilities, Bishop played a pivotal role in talent identification as the Head of International Scouting for Mamelodi Sundowns. His keen eye for emerging talent saw him discover promising players who later flourished in the senior team. Moreover, his remarkable contribution to player development is exemplified by the promotion of 14 players to the Mamelodi Sundowns Senior Team and the emergence of 26 players from the academy who now play professional football in South Africa.
