Dimpho Makubung:  Football through the eyes of a Creative

Role- Video Editing Intern

My internship with Mamelodi Sundowns was an extremely rewarding experience. During this period, I discovered that Sundowns is an organization that promotes humility, respect, and the community. I was placed in the production department and was paired with a phenomenal mentor and manager who guided me through this educational experience. They were always keen to share their knowledge of video production and pushed me to become the best version of myself. I worked with a team that promoted creativity, curiosity, and individuality in my craft and self.

Production in Football

I learned more about my field than I could have ever imagined because I came from a film background with no experience or knowledge in the football space. This opportunity exposed me not only to a unique dynamic to editing but to the production process in its entirety and expanded my skills in special effects. I was able to work side-by-side with my mentor and manager who taught me that I can’t rely on talent alone because teamwork and hard work is the ultimate winning advantage.

Growing as a video editor

This internship was an important step in my development of becoming a more skilled video editor because it allowed me to learn about the culture and dynamics of football, as well as a new approach to enhancing my creativity in the industry.

Working with my mentor [Thato Ngwenya] allowed me to see through the eyes of a creative. He has introduced me to the art of telling a story using visuals and finding my own identity and style as an editor. The production team was very supportive and kept in close contact with me throughout the internship program.

Mamelodi Sundowns Foundation and Investing in the Youth

My biggest highlight was seeing how the club prioritizes giving back to the community and making a difference in young people’s lives through the Mamelodi Sundowns Foundation. I got to be a part of the events and initiatives where the club impacted and uplifted their surrounding communities and other provinces. These experiences made a difference in my life when they invested in my skills and took me to an editing course for Special effects.

Overall, I’m honoured to have had the opportunity to work with incredible individuals who have greatly influenced my life. They have honed my skills and exposed me to the broader spectrum of the media industry. My time at Sundowns was a worthwhile experience and I will forever be grateful for the mentorship and lessons I have received. As I continue my journey outside of the club, I can say that this experience will be something I take with me and will always remember.
