History Beckons as Sundowns Ladies Push for Sixth League Success

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies stand on the brink of yet another historic milestone as they prepare to face City Lads on Wednesday at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. A victory will all but confirm a sixth consecutive Hollywoodbets Super League title, and the mood in camp is one of quiet confidence, laser-focused preparation, and belief.

Midfielder Munashe Mugwara, who produced the match-winning assist against Copperbelt Ladies, says the group understands both the magnitude of the moment and the importance of maintaining their standards.

“It is exciting that the league title is now within reach, but each game is as important as the first game of the league. There is no time for complacency as we play to win all the way until the last game. At this stage of the season, mentality is everything, and we have kept reminding ourselves that nothing is handed out. You earn it on the pitch, minute by minute.”

Mugwara believes the team’s preparation has been spot-on, with every player locked in and pushing to deliver a complete performance.

“I think the team is ready to play and secure the title. Everyone seems determined to seal it. Training has been sharp; the mood is positive, and there is a strong sense of responsibility in the squad. We are ready, and we want to finish on a high note because this City Lads game is the one that will give us the confirmation that all our hard work throughout the season has counted for something.”

Forward Boitumelo Rabale, who scored in the 6–0 thrashing of City Lads when both teams met in April, echoed Mugwara’s confidence while emphasizing the team’s consistency and mentality throughout the entire campaign.

“We are still on course, and our focus is still the same. Throughout the season, we have treated every match with the same level of respect and seriousness, and that is why we are where we are today. Momentum is built through discipline, not shortcuts. We owe it to ourselves, to the badge, and to the Yellow Nation to finish the season on a strong note.”

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have dominated their meetings with City Lads in recent years. Last season, the Brazilians recorded a commanding 7–1 home victory before edging the reverse fixture 1–0. The dominance was equally evident in 2023, where Banyana Ba Style secured a 3–1 away win, followed by a resounding 6–0 home triumph led by a Rabale hat-trick. The pattern continued in 2022 as Sundowns Ladies claimed an emphatic 8–0 win at home before completing the double with a 3–0 victory away from home.

The match between Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and City Lads will take place on Wednesday, 19 November at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. Kick-off is at 15h00.
