Homage to a Defensive Stalwart

Mamelodi Sundowns veteran Wayne Arendse is one of the leading figures in the club’s dressing room and with over 150 appearances for the club, is one of the longest serving players currently playing for the Brazilians.

A fan favourite, ‘Rio’ as he is affectionately known amongst his team mates and supporters, was given a heroes welcome when the team traveled to the Mother City earlier this year.

Appreciating the support from his hometown, Wayne took to Instagram to write:

“The support I received from my hometown was amazing, love you guys. Thanks 2 all the Sundowns supporters from Cape Town for this special welcome, we love and appreciate the support.”

Having joined Sundowns from Santos in July 2012, Arendse has won an impressive eight trophies with Downs and reached heights the defender could only dream of ahead of his big move to the capital. Rio’s medal cabinet has in it four league titles and the CAF Champions League, among many accolades for the defensive stalwart.

Wind back the years to Wayne’s first interview with, “Sky is the Limit” back in 2013.
