Reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have been named among this year’s List of Newsmakers organized by gsport.
Banyana Ba Style’s league triumph which was their third in a row was clinched comprehensively. The Brazilians racked up a staggering 27 wins out of 30 games, scoring 126 goals and conceding just 13 times. The league champions also accrued a mammoth goal difference of +113 en route to gaining recognition from gsport.
The gsport Annual List of Newsmakers initiative was launched in 2019 to bolster the coverage of women’s sports in South Africa as well as close the visibility gap of women in sports.
The Annual List of Newsmakers is generated courtesy of daily reporting in gsport Newsroom which is powered by Momentum and Telkom. Monthly lists of newsmakers are revealed in the build-up to the annual event in December.
Aside from clinching the Hollywoodbets Super League title, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies finished as runners-up in the second edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League last month, an achievement which earned them recognition at the gsport Annual List of Newsmakers.
Thembelihle Masibi who attended the event spoke of her admiration for some of the incredible women who received recognition for their giant strides in sports.
“It is such a privilege to be among the company of great achievers. As a young player, I feel very motivated to work hard and excel at Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies because I desire to be among the recipients of an award someday. I am so excited that we were recognized for our performances during the just-concluded season which saw us retain our league title and reach the final of the continent’s premier women’s tournament. This initiative is a great way to encourage women in sports,” said the young striker.
Nonhlanhla Mthandi also heaped praise on the initiative, “The event was well organized and it was an awesome experience to mingle with some of the biggest names in women’s sports in South Africa. Being in their midst has further motivated me to deliver my best on the pitch whenever I have the opportunity. We wish gsports4girls well in the upcoming year and we look forward to future successes as we grow with them as women in sports.”
Some of the biggest winners of this year’s edition were Marizanne Kapp who was named Newsmaker of the Year thanks to her cricket exploits for the Momentum Proteas, Oval Invincibles and Perth Scorchers in various competitions.
Banyana Banyana were also recognized for winning their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and for qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Congratulations once again to Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and to everyone who was named among the recipients of various awards and recognitions!!!
