Mudau pays Masinga a glowing tribute

Mamelodi Sundowns’ legend Daniel “Mambush” Mudau spoke glowingly of his former strike partner at the Brazilians, the late Philemon “Chippa” Masinga.

The former Sundowns and Bafana Bafana striker passed away on Sunday at the age of 49. Masinga had a glittering career in the colours of Jomo Cosmos and Sundowns before going to play in England, Switzerland, Italy and United Arab Emirates.
He was just two guys shy of scoring 100 goals for Sundowns in 108 appearances. But his most famous goal was the thunderous strike he scored for Bafana Bafana against Congo-Brazzaville, helping the senior men’s national team qualify for the World Cup for the first time.

“I lost a great person and a great leader,” Mudau said. “Chippa wasn’t an ordinary player. He made a lot of contribution in South African football. If you remember well, he scored the goal against Congo that took us to our first World Cup in France in 1998. I played with him at Bafana Bafana and Sundowns, when I came back on loan at Ratanang Maholosiane in 1993. He was signed at Sundowns in 1991 and I was loaned out in 1992. When I came back, we became two deadly strikers. He told me, with my experience you are going to learn a lot from me. I learned a lot from him.”

The South African Football Association (Safa) has formed a task team to organise Masinga’s funeral. They will engage with the family, national government, Sundowns and Jomo Cosmos before announcing the details to the public. Mudau urged South Africans to take better care of its legends.

“It’s painful because we are now talking about Chippa because he is late,” Mudau said. “But what have we done to honour Chippa? The man who took us to France. The man who did South Africans proud. We don’t even have a statue of him. Even I could die tomorrow, but what has been done to honour me? There’ll be talks but what have we done? We need to see that legacy.
“Even if there is a little museum where our legends are honoured. Eish. It’s so sad talking about this. People will hear this and say lona ukhuluma kakhulu (this one talks too much). But in other countries it’s like that, when you have made a contribution for your country they make sure to honour you so that youngsters will see that this person did this and that.”

Rip Chippa.I think Sundowns should take the lead in establishing our own HALL OF FAME to honor our legends. For example, last year it was 30 years ago when we won our first league title 1988.Since then we won 11 league titles, making us the most successful team since 1985.We did nothing to celebrate the achievement of 1988.Where is the players and coaches of that time.We should honor our players when they are still alive.I think we should rename the Sundowns headquarters to legendary Zola Mahobe.

  2. I would like to wish the bush soldiers good luck on the game tonight, Mshishi is back, Langerman is back and i see Jeremy is back and i hope and believe in this line up. KA BO YELLOW

  3. It. Feels gud to win , congratulations to
    technical team the
players & the supporters who were
    @ the stadium….
My only concern is that today’s team was ageing . We had
    two players who
    were under 27, It
    was Lebusa & Maboe
    If the attitude of the
coach does not change, we will be in
a real crisis . Real Madrid is in a serious crisis bcoz the coaches ignored the importance of blending the youth with the veterans.
    I am worried about
    this lack of preparing
    a future team .
    It seems our coach
blv that our veteran players will be playing forever.
    Let us buy Reeve
Froosler, Mothobi Mvala & Siyethemba Sithebe

True member,it seems as if u hv to be 33 to command regular game time.Brockie is not Downs material. We hv changed how we play to accommodate this useless play who failed to make single complete pass for 60 minutes.Meza and Mahlambi always play well whenever given a chance yet Pitso always gives Brockie a chance for doing nothing and this is exactly what he did with Niang.Pitso u wasted our money by signing Brockie and don’t sacrifice our success by trying to prove us otherwise and acknowledge ur mistake. When u signed he had gone 10 games without scoring at Supersport.Bonki Ntuli is way better than Brockie.Stop playing your pees and give our development players a fair chance.Dont be as useless as Morinho coz u share many similarities, you both don’t use youngsters and buy only very old players(Ibramovich and Brockie).

Good win.dankie boys.we played to our strength. We played attacking football from the first minute.I just not sure about this thing of slowing the game cause we are inviting opponents to come to us. I also think mkhuseli should be given more game time. Maboe need to improve his passing and shooting.

  6. Boh

Downs4ever!!broe ur sport on,We are tired of our coach trying to prove a point with this Brookie!!! at our expense,Malajila,Mkhulise,we’re sitting on the bench.Mshishi was destroying Pmb United, but no 1 to finish his work,Believe me I played soccer this one day is going to take away confidence from others, when Brookie is in the starting line-up..Pitso doesn’t play other players, and says they need to improve, plz tell me does Brookie ever sat on the bench,no when he was wasting,he said fans must give him a chance,What criteria he use to know this player needs a chance, but this one must improve by himself…yesterday he picked on Laffor only missing chances,What was that cow Brookie doing on the field,Pisto enough now..this must stop..where is Mahlambi , Ngobeni why Riyaard on the bench..enough now!!!

  7. Boh

Believe Pisto can say or do what ever he wants,no one question Him what game needed Mabunda to slow down,by passing the ball back ward, honestly sometimes u even wish that last minute Pmb chance went in,for our coach big mouth, and we draw but Laffor was going to be his escape goat,,I that him for winning the CAF Champions league, but he’s still getting paid.I wonder if that’s was all he can do for us, he’s got nothing left for us,Masadawana think about it,I’ve never head a coach says he needs a break, even in top football league..has Pisto reached his peak.

  8. mzimela

guys that Brockie issue something to be done Pitso pretend to be blind as if not see the Brockie fail he sideline better players he done that previous for Zakri& Bangaly Pitso does not field player according performance even Maboe not perform well not suppose to start every game Mabunda these days making almost costly mistake tendance of out source i donot support we have enough young talent our development need chance

  9. Bango

Congratulations masandawana, Keep collecting those points ,we need them more than any team, keep moving forward, whether a narrow win or turning a loss to draws or turning draws into wins its ok with us, siyabonga! Lastly but not least , OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE SOCCER FRATERNITY FOR THE LOSS OF THE SOCCER LEGENG OF PHIL CHIPPA MASINGA, May his Soul rest in eternal Peace!

  10. @Bango spot on Member, I think members are getting Personal.we should be frustrated especially when we lose but not when we win. Age comments are not correct.the reason Real Madrid is having the problem is that they lost CR7 WHO has boosted Nugent is big Time, Zakri is now with Maritzburg and that team is now facing relegation.so let us not be personal let us enjoy the win we created 13 goal scoring chances and luck was not with us. TO PITSO WE BELIEVE.

  11. DOWNS4EVER

What’s the use of investing lot of money on development when we are going to use them only when they are 33 yrs of age?.Let us be fair do we really need an injury prone Mnyamane while we hv enterprising Promise Serunkuma at MDC?.This is the reason I once said,I think Pitso cahoots with agents of these useless and old players he brings to our beloved team.We cannot wait until we lose to voice out our concern besides,we were lucky Maritzburg did not equalize at the last minute. We are not a dumping site,we just can’t collect dead woods from other teams and give them lots of money.Pitso doesn’t know what he wants,he personally persuades players to join us and beg management to get them and then puts them on the stands,eg,Wome,Zakri,Ngoma etc. When he sign Mohomi he said “the boy he’s got big heart,he scored an own goal and went on to score for his team “.When he signed Ngele he said “this boy is like Steven Gerald”,what happened next?,the exact same thing is happening with Mahlambi,Pitso made management to work overtime to get him in Egypt and what happened next.We have most skillful and pacey players in the league but are sacrificed for the useless Brockie. After the game he said Laffor made lots of wrongs while he was the one propelling the team forward, what did Brockie do,why did he not said anything about him? and he also praised Ricard whereas Makgalwa beats him all the time and Onyango nearly equalized whilst with him.We all know it took Kekana’s posting of Laffor’s goal against Zamalak for him to start playing Laffor. This is the likes of Billiat left us,this man can’t manage players.I pity the likes of Mkhulise and other development players, until they turn 30 they’ll never play for Downs when Pitso is still there.U can’t say you’re still grooming a 23 year old when Mpape won the World Cup @ 19.
