Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies are gearing up for action this weekend as they face off against Richmond United in their 18th game of this season’s Hollywoodbets Super League on Saturday.
The Brazilians head into this fixture on the back of a dominant 2-0 victory over Lindelani Ladies at King Zwelithini Stadium. Nthabiseng Majiya highlighted the importance of that victory and the boost it provided to team morale.
“We all felt excited after that victory because we were tested by a very defensive opponent and had to be patient at times. Maintaining our momentum and executing our game plan effectively will be crucial as we strive to achieve our season’s objectives.”
Majiya, who leads Sundowns’ scoring chart with 10 goals and was on the scoresheet in the 5-0 victory against the Northern Cape side earlier this season, weighed in on Saturday’s clash.
“Richmond is a tough team and we know they will come at us. We have to maintain our position and play according to instructions. Our focus is on capitalizing on our strengths and exploiting their weaknesses to secure another important win.”
Although Banyana Ba Style has scored a league-high 66 goals this season, Lehlogonolo Mashigo believes the team’s tenacious defending must be lauded considering how the team claimed maximum points last time out.
“We were relieved after winning against Lindelani Ladies because it was not an easy game. Also, it was an away game, which is never easy to play. Nevertheless, I am happy we got all three points and we are looking forward to the next one. While we always seek to score as often as possible, our defense is very strong and remains an important aspect of our tactics.”
Mashigo also believes the one-sided result earlier this season serves as a strong message to their opponents.
“We were able to demonstrate our strength against them in our first meeting and we are determined to replicate that performance this Saturday. We are also determined to deliver an impressive performance in front of our supporters.”
The Continental Champions have dominated against Richmond United in recent encounters. Last season, the Brazilians won 1-0 at home and 3-1 away. In the preceding season, the Tshwane giants triumphed 5-0 at home and 4-2 away. Three seasons ago, Sundowns Ladies recorded a 5-1 home win and a 5-2 victory away.
The match between Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and Richmond United is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 6th, at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Kick-off is set for 15:00 and will be broadcast live on SABC 1.
