Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have been placed in a competitive Group B at the inaugural TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League draw held on Tuesday 29th September in Cairo.
After successfully conquering the COSAFA region in September, Banyana Ba Style secured their place in Novembers showpiece event where eight teams will do battle for continental glory for the first time ever.
With 8 participating teams divided into two groups of four teams in accordance with the regulations, Mamelodi Sundowns were drawn in Group B alongside Kenyan Outfit Vihiga Queens FC, Asfar Club of Morroco and Rivers Angels from Nigeria. The top two sides from each group will progress to the knockout stage to fight for a place in the final
Ladies Team Head Coach Jerry Tshabalala reacted to the draw and said: “It’s an exciting group, I’m really happy that we’ve got Rivers Angels in our group, I’m also happy that we’ve got Vihiga Queens from Kenya, fortunately enough I’ve managed to see some of their games that they’ve played during their qualifiers. The only closed book to us is ASFAR from Morocco, we’ll need to go out there and find out how they play and how they apply themselves.”
“We are ready to go to Egypt, if you want to be the champions, you need to play against the strongest opponents from Africa. We’re doing our homework, we’re ready for [the opposition] and we’re looking forward to representing South Africa quite well.”
Tshabalala concluded his reaction by extending his thanks for all the support that the Ladies team have received thus far: “[I cannot] forget to thank management for the support that they have been giving us, they’ve been behind us. Also [thanks to] our supporters, they’ve been buzzing on social media, urging us to bring it home.”
Our history-making Ladies team will embark on their journey for African glory in November with the dates, times and venues to be confirmed.
