Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have been named the Best Women’s Club in Africa by the International Federation of Football and Statistics (IFFHS) for 2022. The ranking was based on the performance of clubs in international and national tournaments within the last 12 months.
Banyana Ba Style was named the continent’s leading women’s club ahead of Morocco’s AS FAR and Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens. Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies and Tanzania’s Simba Queens completed the top five. South Africa’s University of Western Cape (UWC) and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Ladies were placed seventh and ninth respectively.
The Brazilians famously clinched their third consecutive Hollywoodbets Super League last season, racking up a staggering 27 wins out of 30 games, scoring 126 goals and conceding just 13 times. The league champions also accrued a mammoth goal difference of +113.
Kappa’s side also finished runners-up in the CAF Women’s Champions League and COSAFA regional qualifiers to AS FAR and Zambia’s Green Buffaloes respectively. Overall, Sundowns Ladies scored 147 goals across all competitions in 2022!
Coach Jerry ‘Kappa’ Tshabalala who earned the Coach of the Season honors at the end-of-the-season Hollywoodbets Super League awards was pleased with the announcement by IFFHS.
“We are very excited to have been named the top club in Africa and this is a testament to the sheer commitment of the players and technical team. Our collective performance across the three competitions we participated in last year was crucial to this decision. This award serves as an external recognition and validation of the hard work and dedication of everyone associated with Mamelodi Sundowns. Nevertheless, we will not be dwelling too much on this award because we have another opportunity this year to surpass our achievements from 2022,” Kappa stated.
With the 2023 Hollywoodbets Super League season set to kick off this coming weekend, Coach Jerry is backing his team to continue their strong domestic form.
“We are anticipating another tough and demanding season because several teams will be looking to dethrone us and stop our domination of the league. With that in mind, we have been working on our fitness levels over the last few weeks to ensure that everyone is in the best possible shape ahead of the new season. Our expectations ahead of the new season are to be clinical in front of goal and defensively solid on the road. We aim to perform exceptionally well in the three competitions we will be participating in,” the reigning Hollywoodbets Super League Coach of the Season concluded.
Sundowns Ladies will begin the defense of their Hollywoodbets Super League title this weekend against Richmond United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies on being named the Best Women’s Club in Africa.
