It’s been an eventful season thus far for Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies. The title defense has faced several stern tests and The Brazilians have stood strong in the face of adversity whilst stringing some incredible performances in the catch-up games.
Since the COSAFA final disappointment, The Brazilians have been in beast mode despite playing almost twice every week. A 7-1 win over Golden Ladies was followed by a 1-0 victory over Durban Ladies.
A 7-0 win was recorded against Tsunami Queens followed by a 3-0 win over City Lads Ladies. Most recently, the defending champions thumped Richmond United by five unreplied goals.
That incredible run of form has seen Sundowns Ladies claw their way back into contention for the defense of their league title.
Midfielder Thalea Smidt believes the team has had to dig deep during the last couple of weeks.
“The last month or so have been tough due to the number of games in hand we have had to play. The short turnaround time has had its toll on the team, but we have maintained our bravery game after game. Aside from the hectic scheduling, we have been pushed to the limit by the quality of the teams we have faced in recent times. Despite their tactical set-ups, we have managed to enjoy a perfect run since COSAFA. We are pleased with how far we have come and our position on the table reflects our hard work and determination,” Thalea stated.
Sundowns Ladies have posted 45 points after accumulating 15 wins in 16 games played. The Brazilians have scored a league-high 72 goals and have conceded nine times, the best defense in the league. Mamelodi Sundowns are also yet to earn a draw this season.
Bayana Bayana’s international commitments mean that the Hollywoodbets Super League will take a break until mid-September. After the mini-break, Sundowns Ladies will face in-form JVW FC in a top-of-the-table clash.
Thalea believes the break is much-needed, “This is a perfect opportunity for us to catch our breath. The plan is to reassess ourselves and reflect on our performances thus far. The team has suffered several injuries in the last few weeks, and we hope to be fully healthy ahead of our next game. The season is far from over and everyone within the team knows this.”
Boitumelo Rabale leads the Sundowns’ scoring chart with 13 strikes, while Andisiwe Mgcoyi and Miche Minnies are on 10 goals each. Rhoda Mulaudzi, Gabonnelwe Kekana and Melinda Kgadiete have all scored five times each.
Keep it up Ladies!!!
You guys have been superb in your performances and also the rotation of players has helped to re-energise the team. I was so impressed by Magazi and Lumka in the game against Richmond Ladies those youngsters are our future, big ups to them. I have also been impressed by Chantel, Lelona, Boitumelo, Karabo and the goalkeepers, infact let me say every player who got an opportunity played her part to the success of the team. All the best ladies. Lets keep on showing our class as we build up to our defence of the CAF Champions League Trophy later on in the year. Are we strengthening the team before we get to Morroco?
