Mamelodi Sundowns’ attention now shifts to continental action, as they gear up for a mouthwatering reverse fixture in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF Champions League. They are set to face Saint Eloi Lupopo on Sunday afternoon at the Stade TP Mazembe.
The last time Masandawana played a Champions League match, they were on the road to face Al Hilal in Rwanda, where they lost, dropping them dropping to the third spot on the log. Heading to their fifth and second last match in the group stages against a very strong team, coach Miguel Cardoso shared his views and reflections on where his side is currently in this competition.
“We are in a good place as a team to play this game. Obviously, we know what to do and the pressure comes mostly from ourselves, the will to do well, the intentions to win, and the intentions to collect as many points as possible so that we arrive in the last match in the best conditions,” the coach stated.
“We are almost at the end of the group stages. We know the realities, and we know very well what’s at stake, what we have to do, and what kind of scenarios may happen. Obviously, what happens will be up to us to try to control this game and go to the last match in the best conditions. We will head to this game with a strong understanding of what is expected of us in this match, what we can fight for, and what we need to do to achieve that.”
Previewing the highly-anticipated fixture, coach Miguel admitted it won’t be an easy meeting, especially having to play in front of a strongly passionate group of football lovers. He, however, mentioned that his charges are aware of how important winning this match.
“It’s always difficult to play here because of how strong the teams in the DRC are. Last year, we played Maniema Union, which was also a difficult match for us. We are now back but facing a different opponent.”
“With that being said, we expect a very tough game against Lupopo, but we are ready; we have our own way of playing and preparing for matches. So much is at stake for both teams. For Lupopo, they will need to win both matches in order to advance to the next round, and it’s the same for us. We will have different moments, and we need to manage them properly. We will need to be very focused in order for us to be successful. We know it’s going to be an exciting game and we are looking forward to making our supporters proud,” the Portuguese tactician concluded.
Mamelodi Sundowns will clash Saint Eloi Lupopo on Sunday afternoon at the Stade TP Mazembe. Kick-off has been scheduled for 15H00, live on SuperSport TV.
