Throwback – Downs Go Two Points Clear With One Game Remaining

In this week’s Match Rewind, we take a look at a key fixture on match week 29 of the 2018/2019 Absa Premiership season which helped The Brazilians take the title race to the final day of the season.

Mamelodi Sundowns scored two first-half goals as they overcame Golden Arrows 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld in a win that took them one step closer to clinching the Absa Premiership title.

The Brazilians began the match in the best possible fashion as they found themselves two goals up inside the first six minutes of the match. Downs took the lead after just two minutes when Captain Hlompho Kekana was played in cleverly by Themba Zwane before finishing calmly with his left foot.

Downs doubled their lead within a matter of minutes after forward Gaston Sirino capitalised on a mistake from Arrows defender Musa Bilankulu before playing Zwane who finished emphatically past Arrows keeper Maximilian Mbaeva.

Downs were completely dominant throughout the first half and Sibusiso Vilakazi almost made it three when his shot crashed off the woodwork in the 24th minute before Arrows cleared their lines after a scramble in their box.

Downs went into the break with their two-goal lead intact.
The defending league champions continued the trend of dominance after the break and forward Lebohang Maboe forced Mbaeva into a save in the 57th minute.

Tebogo Langerman was next to test Mbaeva in goals, as he played a dangerous cross into the box which forced the Arrows keeper to remain alert and make a smart save.

At the back, Downs remained resilient and saw out the victory which would ultimately take them two points clear at the top of the Absa Premiership table ahead of rivals Orlando Pirates, setting up a mouth-watering final day of the season in which both teams could seal the title depending on the result of the other.
