Andisiwe Mgcoyi’s first-half strike seals gritty win for the Brazilians

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies continued their remarkable run of form as they registered a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ma-Indies Ladies at the Noordelikes Rugby Stadium in Polokwane in the latest round of the Hollywoodbets Super League.

The Brazilians entered the game as favorites and were highly tipped to control proceedings in a fixture they have enjoyed in recent times. A dominant first half saw the reigning champions boss the possession and were duly rewarded with a fine strike from Andisiwe Mgcoyi in the 37th minute, her sixth goal of the campaign.

Banyana Ba Style continued to push for a second goal but were denied by the opposition. In the end, Andisiwe’s first-half strike was enough to secure their 15th win of the season.

Oratile Mokwena, who put in an impressive shift in midfield, hailed the patience of the team who had to dig deep throughout the game.

“The fixture was incredibly intense as our opponents employed a defensive low block, making it exceptionally challenging for us. Nevertheless, we maintained our composure, exhibited patience and managed to create crucial scoring opportunities. In the end, our perseverance paid off and we secured a well-deserved victory. This result serves as a reminder of our capabilities and strengthens our belief that we can overcome any obstacle on our path,” the midfielder stated.

Mgcoyi, whose strike proved to be the difference between the teams, was pleased with achieving maximum points.

“Away games are always tricky, especially when the opponents decide to sit back and defend deep. Today, we achieved the most important thing, which was to secure maximum points. I am incredibly happy to have scored the winning goal for the team. Every player contributed their utmost to ensure our success in this game and I am grateful to be part of such a talented and supportive group. This win will undoubtedly motivate us to continue pushing boundaries and striving for excellence in every match we play,” said Andisiwe.

In terms of goal-scoring for Sundowns Ladies, Melinda Kgadiete and Boitumelo Rabale are both tied on 12 goals each. Andisiwe Mgcoyi’s recent strike brings her tally to six goals, while Chuene Morifi and Lelona Daweti have both netted five goals.

The Hollywoodbets Super League now goes on a break as Banyana Banyana prepares to depart for Australia and New Zealand, the venues of this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, which runs from 20 July to 20 August.
