Mamelodi Sundowns prepare to face Al-Hilal in the first game of the CAF Champions League group stages tomorrow on their home soil. Bafana Ba Style will be going out to start the competition at home on a high and hope to maintain a good performance throughout the competition. Ronwen Williams shared his insights on the competition.
Sundowns earned their place in this seasons CAF Champions League group stages after a successful run in the preliminary stages of the competition. The Brazilians faced LA Passe and hammered the Seychelles side 15-1 on aggregate which earned them a place in the Group stages of the competition.
Ahead of the Brazilians opener, Ronwen Williams shared the team’s mindset going into their continental football duty. “We know how massive the competition is. Every player’s dream is to be a part of the Champions League, so we’re looking forward to the game and we will perform better for this season’s campaign. The team is excited for the competition, and we’ve done our analysis on our opposition.”
Having extensive continental football experience as a goalkeeper for the national team and his previous club, the accomplished player is positive as they begin with their Champions League campaign. Williams is looking to work together with the Brazilians squad to ensure that the team makes it out of the group stages and reaches the finals in their contest to secure a second star for the club.
“Before I signed into the club, they told me how important this competition is and the targets and objectives of the club. I knew what I was coming into and as a team, we want to be part of the big tournaments like the Champions League and the Club World Cup because we see ourselves there. It’s not easy but I think we have learned and grown from the experiences in the past years, said the Bafana Ba Style goalkeeper.
Williams mentioned that the club’s growth and improvement is indicated in the team’s performance in their domestic league. He added the team is looking good and ready for their first big challenge in the Champions League opener against Al-Hilal.
Masandawana’s goalkeeper relayed a message for the yellow nation and said, “To the Masandawana faithful, please come out on Saturday to support us. We need you guys and in the past few weeks, you have been our extra man. We hope that you come out in numbers so we can start our CAF CL Group stage Campaign on a positive note.”
The Brazilians will lock horns with Al-Hilal on Saturday, the 11th of February 2023 in the CAF Champions League at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Kick-off will be at 15h00.
