Attacks will win you games but your defence wins you titles, looking back at our defensive records

Attacks will win you games but your defence wins you titles – that is the driving force at Mamelodi Sundowns. We take a look at the past three years on how Masandawana have fared up in their back to back winning of the League.

In the 2017/18 season, the Brazilians won the league beating Orlando Pirates to the title by five points. Masandawana scored forty-nine goals in that campaign and conceded twenty-four goals. Six draws and six losses were recorded with eighteen wins. Out of the eighteen wins, ten were from away games and the eight were at home, they managed to score nineteen goals away.

One more league title was secured in the 2018/19 season. Bafana Ba Style scored forty goals and conceded twenty-four goals in the process. The Championship was won with fifty-nine points tipping Orlando Pirates again on the last day of the season, as Masandawana beat Free State Stars by a goal to nil, that also saw Ella Koto relegated to the GladAfrica Championship.

The 2019/20 season was one of the most challenging which needed characters and great team fighting spirit. League runners-up Kaizer Chiefs were leading the championship and that showed as Amakhosi spent most of the time on top and Masandawana had to play catch up. Fifty- nine points again was enough to wrap up three back to back league titles. Twenty- two goals were conceded and forty-three goals were scored.

The last time Mamelodi Sundowns conceded more than twenty-five goals was in the 2012/13 season when they finished in tenth position. Under Coach Pitso Mosimane they have not surpassed the twenty-five goals margin conceded in the league.
