Mamelodi Sundowns have booked their spot in the Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinals following a 5-0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows in the Round of 16 on Saturday evening at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Having asserted dominance early in the game in front of the Yellow Nation, it took the host only 14 minutes to break the deadlock, all thanks to Thapelo Morena through a stunning pass from Lucas Ribeiro. Masandawana looked dangerous on the attack and were moving with a sense of urgency. This made things somewhat easy for them because on the half hour mark, they doubled their lead through Iqraam Rayners. Tashreeq Matthews found Rayners in the box who simply slotted it in an empty net. The two sides went into the break with a 2-0 scoreline.
Despite their lead upon return of play, the Brazilians were still hungry for more goals, as they continued to dominate the ball. After scoring chances from both sides, the first second-half goal came on the 74th minute. It was Mothobi Mvala – who just came back from an injury layoff – that headed the goal to the net from a corner supply.
After causing a lot of problems for the visitors upon his introduction in the second half, Peter Shalulile finally found the back of the net to make it four for Downs with a composed finish.
The proceedings of the day were concluded by a young Kutlwano Letlhaku who also came from the bench. He made a shot with his left foot, stunning the goalkeeper and making it 5 for Masandawana nine minutes before the final whistle was blown. Bafana Ba Style will now wait for the quarterfinals draw to learn of their next opponent.
How we lined up: Williams, Morena, Mvala, Lebusa, Tiwani, Maboe, Coetzee, Allende, Ribeiro, Rayners, Matthews.
Subs: Onyango, Lorch, Mokoena, Mkhulise, Shalulile, Letlhaku, Aubaas, Mudau, Lunga.
Good performance and ,we need to give credit where it is due,Mvala had magnificent game for his first game of the season,he was dishing out precise long passes,i’m always on his case but for this one he deserve all the credit. Morena was outstanding.I don’t think most of us most of us recognize the hard work Mathews does with or without the ball, the boy is a warrior for the team. Good luck on our next assignment. We must always strive to better our previous performance.
Our webmaster is so much lazy, everytime he posted after a day or two our Management must rectify this or hire the new webmaster who will do his/her job perfectly it’s been a long time suffering from this, lastly I think our Technical team made a big mistake in accepting Savreeda back I mean the guy is just occupying our foreign spot without giving us any input and I know he won’t field himself but they also don’t field him because he doesn’t give them anything to be considered (it’s my opinion)
Thanks for the win and I was also happy to see Kutlwano plating at Downs we need a lot of youngsters from our development to play not just to train with the senior team,Kby forever.
Muzi Kunene Saavedra won’t field himself,Kegan Johannes, Kodisang have been bought 2 bolster the team bt strangely r frozen at home.It was the same with Mendieta he lost his taste bcoz of being a fringe player 4 no apparent reason.Sundowns is starting 2 get their mojo Kodisang &Johannes must b introduced.Bt very impressed by the way Sundowns kept the momentum going scoring goals even after the 1st half its an indication that we r heading 2 the right direction..
