Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies kicked off their Hollywoodbets Super League season in commanding fashion, securing a 2-0 win over JVW FC in their opening fixture at Lucas Moripe Stadium. A first-half strike from Boitumelo Rabale and a JVW own goal ensured the reigning champions started their title defense on a winning note.
It was a historic moment for Rabale, who found the back of the net in the 20th minute with a composed finish, continuing her remarkable streak of scoring in the opening game of the season for the fourth consecutive year. The reigning Golden Boot winner has made it a tradition to set the tone early, having scored in the 2022 opener against Ma-Indies Ladies (2-1), the 2023 opener against Richmond United (1-0), and the 2024 opener against Royal AM (4-0).
The Brazilians kept the pressure on, and just eight minutes later, their attacking dominance forced an own goal from the Blue Diamonds, giving the Banyana Ba Style a comfortable lead heading into the break. The second half saw Sundowns control the tempo, expertly managing the game to secure all three points without conceding.
Speaking after the match, Nonhlanhla Mthandi reflected on the tactical battle and the challenges posed by JVW’s defensive approach.
“The game was great. They deployed a very low block—so, so low against us. But for us, the technical team was well-prepared and we knew how to break them down. We remained patient, moved the ball well, and found the spaces we needed to get the goals. Credit to the team for sticking to the plan and ensuring we got the job done.”
Forward Melinda Kgadiete also weighed in on the tough encounter, praising her teammates for their resilience.
“Games against JVW are never easy. They are a well-structured team and they kept a solid defensive line, making it difficult for us to penetrate. We had to stay disciplined, move the ball quickly, and be creative in the final third. It was all about patience and capitalizing on the few chances we got. I am proud of how we managed the game and secured the three points.”
Congratulations to the team for a perfect start to the Hollywoodbets Super League season!
