Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies were unstoppable on Wednesday afternoon as they registered a comprehensive 4-0 win over Central Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) in their second Group B game of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
A stunning brace from Melinda Kgadiete, along with goals from Boitumelo Rabale and Lelona Daweti, was enough to secure all three points for the Brazilians and put their title defence back on track.
Kholosa Biyana praised the team’s performance, describing it as a redemption after the 1-0 loss in the tournament opener. “We showed great character and resilience today. Our defence was solid, and everyone played their part in keeping a clean sheet. The coordination between the midfield and attack was also outstanding, allowing us to control the game’s pace and capitalise on our chances in front of goal. Now, it is important to keep up this momentum, stay focused and ensure we win our next game to strengthen our position in the tournament.”
Despite the dominant scoreline, Asanda Hadebe believes the team could have scored even more. “We created plenty of chances, and while we are happy with the four goals, there were moments where we could have been sharper in front of the net. Overall, the team did an excellent job pushing forward and putting pressure on their defence, but there is always room for improvement. Our objective is to maintain this momentum, keep creating scoring opportunities and aim for an even higher level of performance in the next match.”
The 4-0 defeat means that CBE has now crashed out of the continent’s premier women’s tournament. In the other Group B game, Edo Queens played out a 0-0 draw with FC Masar.
With Sundowns Ladies now on three points in the group, the team will be aiming for more glory as they face Nigerian side Edo Queens on Saturday in their last group game. Already-eliminated CBE faces FC Masar, also on Saturday, with both games happening simultaneously.
The match between Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and Edo Queens will take place on Saturday, November 16th, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. The time for kick–off is 18H00 (19:00 CAT).
