Brian Onyango Opens Up On Defensive Foundations

Mamelodi Sundowns are unbeaten in the last four CAF Champions League matches, and have not lost in the last two away trips.

Masandawana currently sit top of the CAF Champions League table, six points clear of second-placed Al Ahly SC. Heading into this fixture, Bafana Ba Style are prepared to continue their excellent run when they come face to face with Al Hilal of Sudan on Saturday afternoon. Downs center half, Brian Onyango is confident that the team’s good performance will carry them in their next round.

Onyango has been a mainstay in the side since the resumption of football in early February, forming a formidable partnership at the back with fellow defender Rushine De Reuck. Together the paring have helped the team keep four clean sheets in the 4 Champions League matches so far, and Onyango reflected on the positive of the strong defensive foundation the team have laid:

“It’s good for the team because going forward it gives us confidence. The process of coming back into the team and helping has been wonderful.”

“[I have been able to do this] with the help of the Almighty God, my coaches and my teammates and we have been improving with each and every game.”

The Brazilians Victory over Al-Hilal in the Group A clash can take them to advance to the competition’s quarterfinals. Masandawana need just one point from their remaining two games to qualify for the last eight. Meanwhile, the other teams are separated only by goal ratios: Al Ahly, Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh are level on four points with two games to spare.

Mamelodi Sundowns lock horns with Al Hilal on Saturday, 19 March at the Al-Hilal Stadium. Kickoff is at 3pm.
