Brian Onyango Reacts To CAF Champions League Opener

Mamelodi Sundowns have won their first game of the CAF Champions League group stages after defeating Al-Hilal Omdurman 1-0 on Friday evening in Rustenburg.

The CAF Champions League got off to a great start for the reigning PSL Champions, Themba Zwane’s early goal in the encounter was enough to carry the team until the final whistle in group A’s opener. Bafana Ba Style were determined to secure points on home ground against the familiar Sudanese team, having met before in the group stages last year when Down won the first round 2-0 at home and recorded a goalless draw away, The Brazilians prepared themselves well for the battle:

“It’s the first game of the Champions League, we wanted to start on a high note and get three points, and we did it.” Said Masandawana’s center back Brian Onyango.

The Kenyan international has become an integral part of Down’s Campaign in the 2022 Calendar year, having played in all the opening games that Masandawana has played thus far. Onyango provided his thoughts of the encounter that consisted of aggression and strenuous defending for the home team who kept a clean sheet.

“We prepared for them in training, and the coaches told us that we must be ready to jump, and that’s what we expected from them and we did well as the backline. We are all leaders at the back, and that’s what kept us going.”

Masandawana currently top the log table in group A and will look to continue their journey when they face Al-Merrikh at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo next weekend.
