Sundowns Ladies Extend Defensive Record Despite UWC Draw

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies extended their remarkable defensive record after playing out a goalless draw against the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in the Hollywoodbets Super League on Saturday.

The result means Banyana Ba Style have now recorded 11 consecutive clean sheets, continuing a run that stretches back to the final six matches of last season, when they also finished without conceding a goal.

Despite being unable to find the breakthrough against UWC, the Brazilians continued to search for attacking solutions, trying different combinations in their bid to unlock the opposition defence.

Munashe Mugwara acknowledged the team’s determination to find a breakthrough, noting that Sundowns continued to explore different attacking options throughout the encounter.

“We tried so many combinations to see what would work for us. We kept pushing and looking for the right opportunities, but unfortunately, the goal did not come. We will take the lessons from this game and keep working hard to make sure we are better prepared for the next one.”

Melinda Kgadiete acknowledged the challenging conditions but felt Sundowns responded positively after the break, with the technical team making changes in an attempt to influence the outcome. Although the Brazilians created opportunities to take the lead, they were unable to convert their efforts into goals.

“Under the conditions today, with the sun, we cannot complain because both teams had to deal with the same conditions. We came out in the second half with a different approach and we made the right changes to try to get the goal. We did what we could, but we were just not lucky today to score. Sometimes, even when you do the right things and create the opportunities, the ball does not go in. We are going to learn from this game, identify the areas where we need to improve and rectify them as we prepare for the next challenge.”

The goalless draw means Banyana Ba Style’s record in the 2026 Hollywoodbets Super League now stands at 10 wins and one draw, with 38 goals scored and no goals conceded across their opening 11 matches. Having maintained their perfect defensive record, the Brazilians will now look to rediscover their scoring touch and return to winning ways in their next fixture.

In the team’s scoring standings, Isabella Ludwig remains the leading scorer with six goals. Boitumelo Rabale has five, alongside Noxolo Cesane and Refilwe Tholakele. Ronnel Donnelly and Melinda Kgadiete have scored three goals each, while Lebohang Ramalepe, Nonhlanhla Mthandi and Lelona Daweti have two apiece. Karabo Dhlamini, Munashe Mugwara, Nthabiseng Majiya and Wendy Shongwe have also found the net once each, alongside one own goal.
