DOWNS BEAT DEFENDING CHAMPS TO EXTEND THE GAP

Mamelodi Sundowns registered a convincing 2-0 win over the Absa Premiership defending champions Bidvest Wits at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

Sundowns started positively and created the first scoring chance in the seventh minute when Sibusiso Vilakazi broke through on goal, but was denied from close range by Darren Keet.

The Brazilians continued to push forward and opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Percy Tau played Themba Zwane through on goal and he made no mistake with just the keeper to beat.

In the 35th minute Sundowns doubled their lead with Tau once again providing a pin-point pass for Vilakazi to slot home.

Wits tried to find their way back into the game but entered the halftime break trailing by two goals.

The second half started slowly with the first decent effort of the half coming just after the hour mark when Hlompo Kekana tried to beat Keet from inside his own half, but the keeper was alert to the danger and made a save.

Sundowns took their foot off the pedal after that, but Wits threw players forward in attack.

Elias Pelembe came close to pulling a goal back in the 80th minute, but he fired his 18-yard shot inches wide of the target.

In the end it was a comfortable 2-0 win for Sundowns.
