Having managed to book a quarterfinal spot in the CAF Champions League, Mamelodi Sundowns will now shift their focus back to the domestic league, with their first away match seeing them travel to Polokwane to face Magesi FC on Wednesday night at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Masandawana closed their 2024 league campaign in style after defeating Richards Bay 2-0 in Durban. The victory saw them record their sixth consecutive win this season, having recorded a loss earlier in the season. They also kicked off the new season on a high. Speaking to defender, Thapelo Morena, as he looked ahead to the away fixture, he stated that the Brazilians will head to this game with the same mentality they had when competing in the CAFCL.
“I think the mentality is going to be the same. The hunger will be the same because it’s different in the PSL. We played against Magesi in the final and we did not have a good result, so we are going to take it a notch up,” Morena stated.
Having won six matches consecutively in the league, Morena said the team is looking to hold on to the dominance as long as they can as the competition is very tight. He further stated that winning such matches will also help them prepare for the Champions League.
“We want to fix our record in the league and we know that Orlando Pirates who are second on the log are just three points behind us. We need to try to level up and open the gap.”
“If we continue winning, we know it’s going to be difficult for other teams to catch up. And also, when you win and the other team wins, it’s good because it pushes us because we are preparing for the Champions League also,“ he concluded.
Mamelodi Sundowns will meet Magesi for the second time this season on Wednesday night at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Kick-off has been scheduled for 19H30, live on SuperSport TV.
Well done to the boyz for such a great come-back. It doesn’t matter who we were playing, but the character and the will to win is what matters the most. The standard of refereeing was very much poor, the match officials tried to rob us, but it wasn’t to be. Honestly speaking, I never gave them a chance for a come-back, simply because of the pitch and our form. Besides, we hardly come-back after going a goal down. Hopefully the win will spur the boyz to play even better. Ill-discipline has become our 2nd name, and this is a big concern.
Congrats to the whole team for the come back after trailing 1 nil. I repeat the team is not convincing at all , we have no central defence at all, they are very slow, Khoza is worse and hence he commits mistakes. We should not be blinded by the results and not see where the problem is, we now play like we do not have a system ngumdudo wononkala nje, everyone justs kicks the ball high with ni direction. Can we play against Killian Mbhape with that slow defence? Are we ready for the club world cup? The slow Khoza and Kekane could not handle Makhubu come think of it, and you think that we can advance in the champions league with that poor defence. That said I think lets applaud the technical team for the substitution ,tha guys changed the game.If we do not sign speedy defenders at least lets prepare Mvala and convert Lunga to central defence because they are both better in speed than Khoza and Kekana. Then in front of them wr play Tebza and Aubaas as defensive fielders, then play Rebeiro and Mettews/Morena as attacking fielders , play Shasha and Reiners as strikers and you play Mudau and Modiba as wing backs….bench Allende, Maema, kutlwano, and the whoever
When we play on the front foot no one can stop us even match officials. We have skilful, technical and tactically gifted players there no need to waste time playing at the back. The fighting spirit, hunger and aggression from the players saw us through. I’m a bit concerned about our central defence they make too many unforced errors.. I said it many times Sales is not a striker but plays well as a supporting striker or a number 10,the boy is intelligent and skilful. The commitment from players was second to none. We have many quality players we must always play on the front foot from the word go because when we get tired we have equally talented players on the bench.Let’s build from this performance.
