Gabonnelwe Salome Kekana has expressed delight after her solid performances during her debut season with Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.
The Soshanguve-born player joined the reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Ladies in early 2021.
Kekana who is widely known for her versatility helped the Brazilians to retain their league crown and was part of the team that reached the final of the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco.
On her debut season at Chloorkop, Kekana said, “It’s been a great experience representing Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies because there is lots of pressure to deliver when you play for such a big club. However, I was able to overcome the obstacles thanks to the support of my teammates, coaches and technical staff. The knowledge I gained from my debut season will help me to thrive in this wonderful club.”
The highly rated 26-year-old player also mentioned some of her favorite moments during her debut season.
“Scoring on my continental debut against Mozambique’s Costa Do Sol in the COSAFA Women’s Champions League zonal qualifier meant so much to me because I had just returned from an injury. It was a beautiful moment and I will always cherish that feeling. I also remember how emotional I got when I scored my first league goal which coincidentally was in the highly anticipated Tshwane derby and against my former side, TUT,” Salome said.
Kekana who has been lauded for her ability to play as a striker, winger, midfielder and full-back registered an impressive six goals as Banyana Ba Style retained their Hollywoodbets Super League title in style.
Aside from scoring in the Tshwane derby, Salome famously grabbed a stunning brace in the 7-1 win against Golden Ladies and scored in victories over Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies, JVW FC and Richmond United.
On her objectives for the 2023 season, Kekana says, “I am looking forward to improving on my performances so I can get more playing time. We desire to fight for every competition we participate in and I am determined to contribute to the success of the team. Given that we are the defending champions in the league, everyone will be aiming to dethrone us. However, I am ready to give everything to achieve our objectives.”
