Masandawana Maintain Momentum With Win Over Richards Bay

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their run of victories with a 2-0 win at the King Zwelithini Stadium against Richards Bay FC on Friday evening. The victory consolidated the top spot in the league for Bafana Ba Style and saw them continue their streak of clean sheets in domestic action.

Masandawana started brightly despite the tricky conditions, with Haashim Domingo having the first sight at goal early on with a shot from outside of the box. Midfielder Themba Zwane had the best chance of the first twenty minutes when he was played through on goal, however he was denied from close range by Salim Magoola in goal.

Bafana Ba Style would continue to keep Magoola busy with numerous strikes that came in from Mshishi and Marcelo Allende.

The Brazilians managed to break the deadlock with six minutes remaining in the first half when Aubrey Modiba’s lobbed through ball found Cassius Mailula, who struck first time and lobbed Magoola in goal to give Downs the lead going into the halftime break.

The second half saw the team from Tshwane come out with the same attacking intent from the first half and Teboho Mokoena was eager to try to add to the lead with a speculative shot within forty seconds of the restart.

The Brazlians doubled their lead midway through the second half when Marcelo Allende’s shot was spilled by Magoola in the Richards Bay goal. Domingo – who returned to the starting XI for the first time since the Carling Black Label Cup final – scored his first since October.

The technical team made a triple change in the closing stages of the match with Gaston Sirino, Sipho Mbule and Sphelele Mkhulise coming on to provide energy towards the end.

The win takes Masandawana to 37 points at the summit of the DStv Premiership at the halfway stage of the league season. The Brazilians will return home to being their preparations for next weeks home action against Chippa United.
