Onyango turns 35

With close to 200 appearances for the Brazilians and 85+ clean sheets, Denis Onyango has built a reputation which took him to the summit of the continent. The Sundowns number-one was crowned as CAF’s African-based Player of the Year for 2016, after pushing his side to the Champions’ League title that year, and later named in the inaugural FIFPro Africa Best XI in 2018.

The 35-year-old shot-stopper is a mainstay in Uganda’s national side and was first made captain when Milutin Sredojevic was in charge.

New Ugandan coach, McKinstry, has now taken charge of Uganda and said Onyango will continue to lead the Cranes as he is a senior figure in the dressing room.

Onyango has lifted 10 major trophies, which includes six Absa Premiership titles, since arriving in South Africa from Saint George in 2006.

Onyango has been a loyal servant of Masandawana over the last nine years and Coach Mosimane is an avid Onyango supporter;

“Number one in Africa, there’s no argument. You’ve got to do it at home [in the PSL], for your club and internationally with your country.”
