This week marked exactly three months since Mamelodi Sundowns were on the pitch, the last bit of action being our cup win over Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium where Keletso Makgalwa scored a memorable late winner.
It’s a victory that guaranteed our passage to the Nedbank Cup semi-final and puts the club closer to yet another cup final.
A chance to add to the Telkom Knockout title that’s already at Chloorkop following our triumph against Maritzburg United in December.
Football was suspended not long after the trip to Tembisa on March 14 because of the Coronavirus pandemic outbreak, and coach Pitso Mosimane’s charge towards a record ‘La Decima’ was briefly put on hold – it was important to not put lives at risk.
At the time, the Brazilians were cruising as they registered four straight wins in the Absa Premiership to close the gap on log leaders Kaizer Chiefs…and we still have a game in hand over our Soweto rivals.
The good run of form saw an improvement in our log position as well and moved us up to second place: 21 games played, 13 wins, 5 draws, only 3 defeats and a total of 44 points to make for an intriguing title race.
With the anticipation of the resumption of the domestic season, pending the green light from the government first and then the Premier Soccer League, the players and coaching staff have found ways to stay in shape through virtual training, with Thapelo Morena one of those to benefit from the lengthy hiatus after his ankle injury back in February.
Our remaining fixtures (new dates to TBC):
Orlando Pirates (H)
Highlands Park (A)
Maritzburg United (A)
Cape Town City (A)
Golden Arrows (H)
Kaizer Chiefs (A)
Baroka (H)
Polokwane City (A)
