Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will be aiming to get back to winning ways as they square off against Thunderbirds Ladies in a crunch midweek battle.
On Sunday, Sundowns Ladies were edged out in the highly anticipated Tshwane Derby by TUT Ladies Football Club courtesy of a 1-0 defeat, their second loss of this season’s Hollywoodbets Super League.
Coach Jerry ‘Kappa’ Tshabalala has backed his troops to respond in style against the team from Butterworth.
“This is another tough fixture that will require us to dig deep. It is a perfect opportunity for us to redeem ourselves after a very unfortunate result in the Tshwane Derby. We gained some valuable lessons against TUT Ladies, and we are hoping to get back to our groove on Wednesday,” Kappa stated.
Sundowns Ladies have enjoyed this fixture in recent times. The Brazilians scored 9 times against their opponents last season, with a 4-0 home win and a 5-0 away victory recorded. Earlier this term, a hat-trick from Andisiwe Mgcoyi powered Kappa’s charges to a dominant 5-1 away victory against the Eastern Cape team.
Sundowns Ladies remain on top of the Hollywoodbets Super League standings with 49 points, 4 points clear of JVW FC and TUT Ladies who are currently tied on 45 points. With the battle for the title heating up at the top, Coach Jerry continues to be confident of his team’s chances.
“It’s been a very competitive season and the fight for the title is testament to that. Despite the dropped points against TUT, I am still confident that we have the capacity of retaining the title. As champions, every team is looking to make a statement against us, and we are well aware of the challenge. One thing we have done well is to respond when it matters this most and we are ready to do just that on Wednesday,” Kappa concluded.
Thunderbirds Ladies are currently placed ninth on the Hollywoodbets Super League table and lost their last game to Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies by a 1-0 scoreline.
The clash between Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and Thunderbirds Ladies will take place on Wednesday, 28 September 2022, at Lucas Moripe Stadium. The kick-off time for the clash is 15h00.
