Sundowns Ladies dominate headlines at the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards

The second edition of the Hollywoodbets Super League awards ceremony for the 2022 season which was held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Saturday was dominated by reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.

The Brazilians were crowned league champions for the third consecutive season time since the inception of the Hollywoodbets Super League in 2019.

Coach Jerry ‘Kappa’ Tshabalala edged out competition from UWC’s Thinasonke Mbuli and TUT’s Lucky Sibiya to land the Coach of the Season award for the second time in a row.

Kappa who masterminded his troops to a memorable defense of their Hollywoodbets Super League title last month walked away with the sum of R50,000.

“We had a very solid season in the Hollywoodbets Super League which saw us win 27 games out of 30 played. One of our objectives at the beginning of the campaign was to successfully defend our title and we did just that despite losing tough games to UWC and TUT. Those defeats only spurred us on and we are happy with the way we finished the season. I am dedicating this award to my players for a job well done.”

After smashing in 24 goals, Banyana Ba Style attacking midfielder Boitumelo Rabale was named the Player of the Season. The Lesotho-born player who also walked away with R50,000 edged out fellow teammate Bambanani Mbane and TUT’s Busisiwe Ndimeni to the award.

Kappa’s charges finished the Hollywoodbets Super League season with 27 wins out of 30 games, scoring 126 goals and conceding just 13 times. The Brazilians also accrued a mammoth goal difference of +113.

In other categories, Richmond United’s Nthabiseng Majiya was named the best Young Player of the Season while veteran striker JVW FC’s Nompumelelo Nyandeni who scored 30 goals in 30 matches this season clinched the top scorer award.

Bloemfontein Celtic goalie Katlego Moletsane was named Goalkeeper of the Year, beating off competition from the likes of UWC’s Regirl Ngobeni and Sundowns Ladies Sedilame Boseja. Hloniphile Msezane was named Referee of the season while Amogelang Msiza was named Assistant Referee of the Season.

A massive Congratulations to the Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Team!!!

How does a goalkeeper who plays for a team with 13 goals conceded lose to a keeper who conceded 22 goals all season ending as number 6 on the log…. something is fishy there They should have just given it to Basija she also deserved it. There is nothing wrong if a team has a clean sweep of the awards. I think this was just a balancing act and they know it should have gone to the Downs keeper.
Congratulations to Jerry and Boitumelo for taking the awards… well deserved. Let the girls rest and come back refreshed. Hoping that we strengthen our squad for a grueling season ahead.
