Mamelodi Sundowns have completed a league double against Cape Town City following a solid performance and the 0-2 victory on Saturday night at the Cape Town Stadium.
Both teams were very assertive from the beginning of the match. It is the hosts, however, who fired the first trigger but luckily Ronwen Williams bucketed that first effort. Of course, that forced the visitors to retaliate. Lucas Ribeiro, Thapelo Morenaand Teboho Mokoena made good efforts in front of goal but they were saved by the home side’s goalkeeper.
After continuously knocking on the door, Masandawana finally broke the deadlock through Tahsreeq Matthews in the 34th minute. The ball came from Iqraam Rayners, who had dribbled his way past the defenders to deliver the ball to Matthews, who just toe-poked it in to open the scoring.
Morena, again, came close to scoring, to double his side’s advantage, but the shot he fired was smacked away by the goalkeeper. To conclude the first stanza, the hosts had a big chance to equalise, but Mokoena’s acrobatic efforts saw him stretch his legs to make a clearance. The Brazilians went into the break with a lead.
The hosts almost opened the second half with a goal but Morena’s pace through a good run helped as he cleared the ball to deny them a goal.
Arthur Sales also came close to extending the advantage for Masandawana. Aubrey Modiba had delivered a long ball to Sales, who tried to head it inside the box, but it was slightly misdirected as he missed the target.
Matthews almost registered a brace at the Cape Town Stadium, but his effort struck the crossbar. The second goal came in the 78th minute through Rayners. Sales had set him up nicely through a defence-splitting pass. Rayners then made a good run and finished the work off by firing the ball past the keeper.
Cape Town City remained relentless in the final stages of the match, but the Downs backline was tightened, denying them a goal, to finish the match with three points and a clean sheet.
