Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies continue their Hollywoodbets Super League title defense on Saturday with a highly anticipated clash against UWC. After a determined start to the season, the reigning champions will be eager to secure another crucial victory as they face one of their strongest competitors in the league.
Last season, the two teams had contrasting results in their encounters. UWC claimed a 1-0 victory in the first meeting, handing Sundowns a rare defeat. However, the Brazilians responded in style during the final game of the season, securing a 2-0 win, with goals from Andisiwe Mgcoyi and Lehlogonolo Mashigo.
Ahead of the encounter, Sundowns Ladies’ Cimone Sauls and goalkeeper Sedilame Bosija shared their thoughts on the challenge ahead.
Sauls highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum after their season opener against JVW FC.
“Of course, we are very happy we got three points, but also very happy that we kept a clean sheet, which is just as important as getting the three points. JVW is not an easy team to play against, but I think we showed a lot of courage and character in the game. We implemented what the coach told us to do, and it worked in our favor. It is very important for us as a team to start the league on a high to get the momentum going. Our main goal now is to keep the winning streak for as long as possible.”
Looking ahead to the match against UWC, Sauls acknowledged the strength of their opponents but remained confident in Sundowns’ preparation:
“Yes, UWC is not an easy game; they have always been one of our biggest competitors in the league. But I think we have prepared well for the game, and we will be able to manage any scenario they may bring to us. If we stick to our game plan and execute what we have been doing at training and what the coach has taught us, things should go our way. We are hoping to get another three points against UWC and then shift our focus to the next team we play against.”
Goalkeeper Sedilame Bosija emphasized the positive atmosphere in the squad and the confidence gained from the first game:
“The mood is very good; everyone is looking forward to Saturday’s game. Also, the game against JVW gave us more confidence in terms of keeping the ball and scoring goals.”
Bosija also recognized the challenge UWC presents but stressed the importance of consistency:
“It is never easy playing them, but it is also a motivation playing against them because they are one of the best teams in the league. The main goal is to be consistent and try to improve from the previous game.”
As Sundowns Ladies aim to continue their strong start to the season, they will be looking to assert their dominance and secure another key victory.
The match between Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and UWC is set to take place at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, March 22, at 15H00.
