A league title is the hardest to win in any country – Coach Rulani Mokwena

Mamelodi Sundowns became the DStv Premiership Champions for the 2022/23 season with 7 games to spare. Head Coach, Rulani Mokwena, spoke about winning the domestic league early as well as how crucial it is working towards clinching the title and also made it clear it that its not easy to win the league.

Coach Mokwena shared his feelings about winning the league title. “A league title is the hardest to win in any country. In the league, we have to play against 15 opponents both home and away, and the competition lasts for eight to nine months. When people start to think it looks easy, that’s actually when it the toughest.”

Having won the league title for the sixth consecutive time, Mamelodi Sundowns want to continue with their winning ways and dominate the domestic league. Becoming the league winners with having seven games in hand, saw the Brazilians break record for being the earliest winners in the PSL era since 1996.

The Masandawana Coach communicated that the reason why he always emphasised that his group of players wasn’t getting enough appreciation is that he knows how demanding the league is. He added that what the players have done this season is impressive and they deserve to be congratulated.

“From a mental perspective, it’s extremely difficult to have the level of consistency that this group has shown in the number of games that they have played. To win continuously and deliver results without getting tired is not easy. With human beings, there’s usually an element of complacency that creeps in, and it is challenging for one not to allow that to consume you”, said the Brazilians Coach as he touched on the mental aspect of sustaining consistency in the competition.

Bafana Ba Style are sg at the summit of the log table with top fifty-nine (59) points in the twenty-three matches that they have played. The league winners have managed to win 19 games, were held to a draw fin two games, and lost only two games.

With seven league games to go, and participating in three competitions (DStv Premiership, CAF Champions League, and Nedbank Cup) for the remainder of the season, the team looks to maintain their performances and results.

Mamelodi Sundowns return to action on Tuesday (4 April 2023) as they host the Citizens, Cape Town City at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium for a DStv Premiership Clash. The game will kick off at 19h30.
