It was goals galore at the Lucas Moripe Stadium when Mamelodi Sundowns beat Siwelele FC on Saturday evening. An early goal from Teboho Mokoena, an own goal, a brace from Tashreeq Matthews and a hattrick from Brayan Leon saw Masandawana scooping seven goals and three points in their last home league game of the season.
Masandawana took a early lead inside seven minutes through Mokoena’s volley. Siwelele had attempted to clear the ball when it landed on the edge of the box where Mokoena found the rebound. He did not waste time when he lowly fired a shot into the left corner of the net to open the scoring for Downs.
Two minutes later, Downs doubled their advantage through Matthews. Nuno Santos was the supplier of the cross which found a Matthews who was squeezed between two defenders. Matthews connected his head to the ball and redirected it towards goal to make it two for his side.
The hosts were in control and saw themselves tripling their advantage on the 24th minute and this time around, it was an own goal. Leon’s attempt had been cleared away by the goalkeeper but the ball fell near the goal line. In an attempt to clear the ball away, Siwelele’s Nyiko Mobbie slotted the ball in.
Just before the half-hour mark, the visitors slotted in their first goal of the match. A back-pass by Khulumani Ndamane was intercepted by the visitors. They took advantage of that ball and put it past Ronwen Williams through a tap-in.
On the 37th minute, Matthews registered his brace through a finish after being set up by Leon, making it four goals for the hosts.
After numerous attempts to find the back of the net, Leon finally added his name to the scores heel just before the break. This saw the hosts heading to the interval with a four-goal advantage.
Upon return to play, the Brazilians were hungry for more goals and while they were looking to add more, their Siwelele counterparts scored first to make it 5-2.
Following Siwelele’s goal, in a space nine minutes, Leon scored two goals to make it seven goals to two for his side.
Masandawana, however, went on to concede two more goals. One came on the 65th minute and the other on the 80th minute through a penalty kick after a foul in the box.
While they were not satisfied with the seven goals, Masandawana had to settle for that as they grabbed all points on offer.
