Coach Manqoba Looks Ahead To Maritzburg Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up for more action in the domestic league as they prepare to face Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala stadium on Saturday evening. The Brazilians will be looking to add three more points to their league tally before they turn their attention to the upcoming Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League encounters on the horizon.

Speaking ahead of the game, Co-Coach Manqoba Mngqithi said his side are wary that Maritzburg’s form should not deter their current preparations:

“It’s another tough game that we are preparing very well for. These wounded teams can be very dangerous, Maritzburg have not been at their best and we would not want them to come back against us.”

“We believe that our players understand the importance of giving it their best shot and giving the respect that is required and never develop any form of complacency because our journey is still very long and we still have the responsibility to represent our badge with pride.”

Downs recently crossed the 50-point mark in the league with the recent resounding 3-0 over TS Galaxy in Mbombela. Whilst the win helped strengthen the teams win at the top over the table, Mnqgithi has suggested that them are not focused solely on lifting the league title but rather being the best possible team they can be:

“I believe the title is far from being clinched, it’s not our focus at this stage because we don’t want to derail ourselves by focusing on the championship when we could focus on our own benchmarks. We want to achieve better than what we achieved last year, our responsibility is not to focus on the championship but to make sure that we better our best records.”

The Brazilians have already taken part in 7 games since they returned to football in 2022, travelling across the country as well as the African continent to partake in league, cup and continental competitions.

“The players understand that we have our regeneration protocol that we follow, we are a team that is very serious about ensuring that we recover fully and that we get as much rest as possible. In the small moments between games we have the responsibility to make sure that we recover and make sure that we get out.”

Mamelodi Sundowns do battle with Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday evening in DStv Premiership action. The match will kick off at 19H30 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport Channel 202.
