Downs Go Down in League’s Curtain Closer

Mamelodi Sundowns suffered their first loss of the season following a 1-0 defeat against Cape town City on Saturday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld.

From the time the kick-off whistle was blown, the hosts were dominating, but it was the Cape Town-based outfit that produced the first big chance of the match through Khanyisa Mayo. Ronwen Williams was quick with his feet as he charged outside his box to kick the ball out to make what was a vital clearance.

In what was a box-to-box kind of first half, Masandawana kept knocking on the door and created chances through Siyabonga Mabena, but they struggled a bit with connecting the ball, especially in the area.

The first stanza was concluded with a shot at range by Lebohang Maboe, but he just couldn’t get it right as the ball went over the bar, taking both sides to the break deadlocked at 0-0.

It was a crackling restart as both sides were looking to land a blow and not have the repeat of the first leg, having to end the game in a goalless draw. So, the packed Loftus Versfeld were up for an exciting second half.

The pressure was now all from the Brazilians as they sent City’s goalkeeper, Darren Keet to work, with their few scoring opportunities. There was a sense of urgency from the Pretoria-based side as they looked to find an opener.

Despite dominating possession throughout the match, it was the visitors who made the opening breakthrough on the hour mark through Jaedin Rhodes. He snatched the ball from Mothobi Mvala’s possession to slot it in the box.

Unfortunately, Bafana Ba Style could not to level matters, registering their first loss of the season. Although the DStv Premiership season has come to an end, it’s still business for Masandawana as they will now switch their focus to the Nedbank Cup final that will take place at the weekend in Mbombela.

How we lined up: Williams, Mudau, Lebusa, Mvala, Zungu, Coetzee, Maboe, Zwane ©, Matthews, Mabena, Morena.

Subs: D. Onyango, Lunga, Mdunyelwa, Mokoena, Mbule, Mendieta, Maema, Esquivel, Ribeiro.

Eish Mvala again and our coach is shielding him that everyone makes mistakes, this guy during his playing days at Highlands Park he was a middlefielder but at Downs he’s a defender and most of the time pacey players caught him pants down even during the game against TS Galaxy he was struggling.
How come a player like that would be comfortable on our too many backpasses because uyinkomo but our coach will play him again next week because he’s the favourite of him.
I know this invincible thing was our bragging rights because the league was already won but Mvala spoiled it since when he’s a dribbler hope they won’t renew his contract the day its come to an end.
The only thing about him is taking a penalty that one I can put my head on the block.

I so wish that when we play our first league game next we can just lose it so that we r not going to talk about this invincibles rubbish. So that we will b playing to attack&b a free scoring team unlike these 1 nil score line thing since the start of this year.Yes in terms of 1000 passes we were convincing bt not when it comes 2 scoring & converting chances. When it comes 2 Mvala its very risky 2 select him,hay hay if its not a straight red, penalty, yellow card or free kick in a dangerous area.Ive seen enough of Mvala,am not expecting anything surprising abt this man.
