Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies got back to winning ways spectacularly as they secured a dominant 5-1 victory over Durban Ladies in Saturday’s Hollywoodbets Super League clash in Durban.
Nthabiseng Majiya hammered in a superb brace, with Kholosa Biyana, Refilwe Tholakele and Andisiwe Mgcoyi also finding the back of the net as Banyana Ba Style grabbed their 12th win of the season comfortably.
The Brazilians began the game on the front foot, with Majiya opening the scoring in the 7th minute thanks to a fine team move. Although the Durbanites equalized not long after, the Tshwane giants restored their lead through Biyana. Tholakele made it 3-1 before the halftime whistle as Banyana Ba Style went into the break with a comfortable lead.
Sundowns Ladies continued to dominate both possession and territory after the restart and Majiya was on hand to score her second of the game and her 10th of the season. Andisiwe stepped up with a late strike to seal the deal to return to winning ways.
Nonhlanhla Mthandi praised the team for a dominant performance after drawing the last game: “Everyone understood the assignment today and the need to bring our A-game because of the unexpected result we had last time out. The opposition was quite energetic and even equalized, but we kept our composure and executed our game plan effectively. The team showed great resilience and teamwork, which ultimately led to our victory. I am very happy with our level of performance today, and we are ready for the next one.”
Cimone Sauls also praised the team’s tactics and emphasized the need to build on the momentum: “It was a tough game, as you know, away games are always tricky. We did very well in maintaining the game and keeping possession. We executed everything we learned from training and are pleased with the outcome. Now, it is time to build on this performance and continue improving as we prepare for our next matches. Our focus will be on maintaining this high level of play and striving for even better results.”
Nthabiseng Majiya’s brace means she now leads the Sundowns Ladies’ scoring chart with 10 goals, two more than Boitumelo Rabale. Miche Minnies has seven goals to her name, while Refilwe Tholakele and Andisiwe Mgcoyi both have five goals. Salome Kekana, Lebohang Ramalepe and Asanda Hadebe have all scored three goals. Chuene Morifi, Kholosa Biyana, Regina Mogolola, Rhoda Mulaudzi and Zanele Nhlapho have scored twice each. Cimone Sauls, Melinda Kgadiete, Malebogo Shawe, Bambanani Mbane, Lehlogonolo Mashigo, Khunjulwa Mali and Karabo Dhlamini have all scored once.
Up next for Sundowns Ladies is a home clash against the University of Fort Hare, slated for Saturday, the 22nd of June, at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 13:00.
Good performance from the ladies however, we need to keep the constistency, this league is no longer a walk in the park. We need to fight for every win. Teams want to topple us, it is almost like they are ganging up to ensure that they have a different league winner this season. This is good for the team that they meet stiff opposition in every match as this will prepare us well for our CAF Champions League defence later in the year
