High-flying Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will be aiming to continue their splendid start to the season as they face arguably one of the biggest weeks of their Hollywoodbets Super League season thus far. The Brazilians face mouth-watering clashes against Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies FC and JVW FC on Wednesday and Saturday respectively.
Thus far, The Brazilians have shown everyone exactly why they are continental champions. Banyana Ba Style has bagged six wins out of seven games played, scoring a league-high 36 goals, and have conceded just five times, boasting a mammoth goal difference of +31.
On the goal-scoring front, Andisiwe Mgcoyi leads the Sundowns’ chart with nine strikes, Boitumelo Rabale has bagged eight goals while Miche Minnies has netted four times. Mgcoyi spoke about how she changed the complexion of the clash against Thunderbirds Ladies after coming off the bench in the second half to register a stunning hat-trick.
“The fixture against Thunderbirds Ladies was a tough affair. While on the bench, there were several observations I made and I duly showed my qualities in the final third when I was introduced. It’s always a good feeling when you have a positive impact on the outcome of a game,” the last season’s joint-golden boot winner stated.
Mgcoyi who has been in scintillating form with two trebles already this season is anticipating a tough clash against Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies.
“The game against Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies will be a major test for us. They are a very good side who are also gunning for the title this season. They have twice won the league (2016 and 2017), which means they have got a solid pedigree when it comes to the big clashes. Nevertheless, we have to take our chances when they come. Although we have had a couple of high-scoring encounters, I believe we can do much more in front of goal,” Andisiwe concluded.
Coach Jerry ‘Kappa’ Tshabalala is relishing the prospect of facing one of the league’s in-form sides.
“These are the games that define our mentality and character. Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies are not pushovers and their results this season have been impressive. We anticipate a tough encounter, but we have to stick to our style and philosophy. We are ready to leave it all on the pitch against our opponents,” Kappa stated.
Last season, Sundowns Ladies registered 2-0 victories in both home and away fixtures against Bloemfontein Celtic. Thus far, Celtic have won four games out of seven played and are currently placed third on the log with 15 points.
The heavyweight fixture between Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic will take place on Wednesday, 1 June 2022, at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. The kick-off time for the clash is 15h00.
