Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams has received an international nod, following his nomination for the 2024 Ballon d’Or Yachine Trophy. The annual French football awards released the full nomination list for 2024, and the Downs shot stopper made it on the prestigious list of the recently introduced category.
Not only is he the sole African nominee in this year’s rendition of the awards, but he also becomes the first goalkeeper in history to be nominated for the Yachine Trophy while playing for an African club.
Williams helped the Brazilians win the inaugural African Football League (AFL) and the DStv Premiership in the 2024/24 campaign. He made the headlines during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), especially for his great exploits against Cape Verde, making four penalty saves and helped Bafana Bafana to their first semi-final in almost 25 years.
The Downs shot stopper becomes the fourth African goalkeeper to be nominated for the Yachine Trophy after Andre Onana, Edouard Mendy and Yassine Bounou.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on Monday, the 28th of October 2024. The Mamelodi Sundowns family celebrates Williams for the special recognition and wish him all the best!
