Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will be aiming to begin their quest for a fourth consecutive Hollywoodbets Super League title on a high as they square off against Richmond United in a repeat of the final game of last season.
Banyana Ba Style registered an entertaining 4-2 victory the last time both sides clashed with Salome Kekana, Lelona Daweti, Melinda Kgadiete and Lehlogonolo Mashigo all getting on the score sheet.
Ahead of the new season, Coach Agnes ‘Madala’ Nkosi is optimistic about her team’s chances after a very rigorous last few weeks in training.
“I am very happy with the level of preparation we had during the pre-season break which has injected a confidence boost into the team ahead of the new campaign. We expect a tough game against Richmond United because they are a very solid side that often enjoys big results against top sides. Although we dominated them last season, they remain a very tactical team that can spring surprise results. We need to be switched on at all times to prevent any upsets and I am confident of our capacities to deal with their threats,” Madala stated.
The Brazilians have enjoyed good fortunes against Richmond United in recent times. Two seasons ago, Sundowns Ladies scored 10 goals against their opponents with a 5-1 victory registered on home soil and a 2-5 win clinched on away territory.
Last campaign, the Chloorkop-side registered a comprehensive 5-0 home victory and a hard-fought 4-2 away win. Lelona Daweti who scored in both home and away fixtures last season is anticipating a sterner test this time around.
“Games against Richmond United have never been easy even though the scorelines have told a different story. We believe they will come harder at us on Sunday and these are the kinds of challenges that we have been conditioned for. Securing a victory on Sunday is crucial for us as it will send a clear message to the other teams about our determination to retain the Hollywoodbets Super League title. On a personal note, I am hoping to continue my rich form against them,” said Daweti.
Goalkeeper Sedilame Bosija also believes the team is ready for the busy schedule ahead, “Every team will be aiming to get their hands on the Hollywoodbets Super League title. Therefore, we expect a very tough season ahead not just in the league, but also across the continental competitions we will be participating in. We are looking forward to the game against Richmond Ladies and we hope to begin the new season on a confident note.”
The Brazilians enjoyed complete dominance in the Hollywoodbets Super League last campaign, registering 27 wins out of 30 games, scoring 126 goals and conceding just 13 times. Banyana Ba Style also racked up a massive goal difference of +113.
