Mamelodi Sundowns have taken control of the CAF Champions League semifinal with a first leg win following a 1-0 victory over Esperance de Tunis on Sunday night at the Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi. It is Brayan Leon’s only goal of the match that saw coach Miguel Cardoso’s charges leaving Tunisia with an away goal.
The intentions were very clear from both sides from the time the kick-off whistle was blown. End-to-end football was witnessed very early into the opening half, with Masandawana dominant on the ball.
The first big scoring opportunity, however, came from the hosts just before the ten-minute mark. The ball came from a tight angle on the left flank but the Downs shotstopper, Ronwen Williams made a catch. Williams was tested again a few minutes later inside the area when the ball went past a body of blue jerseys but his anticipation was amazing as he made another catch of the ball.
Esperance were creating plenty of chances in front of goal, threatening the Downs rearguard. Another opportunity came for them through a cross which connected to a header inside the box. While the hosts tried to redirect the ball towards goal, Khuliso Mudau trapped the ball with his legs to deny the hosts.
The first big chance for the visitors came on the 28th minute from Arthur Sales. Having been met by the ball on the edge of the box, he fired it towards goal but it deflected, denying coach Miguel’s men an opener.
Just after the hour mark, Esperance came close to breaking the deadlock with a thunderous strike but were denied by the woodwork.
The hosts had another opportunity inside the box but before even firing the shot towards goal, Mudau slid to punch the ball away, earning a corner. They came close again from the setpiece but Williams’ reflexes helped as he smacked the ball away to keep the score at 0-0 at the break.
Bafana Ba Style made an early signal through Brayan Leon just a minute into the second half. Leon dived to head the ball towards the target but the keeper tipped it away.
It only took six minutes into the second stanza for the visitors to find the back of the net. Thapelo Morena set it up for Leon who was squeezed in by two defenders but that didn’t stop the forward from beating the defence to break the deadlock through a header.
On the 65th minute, the hosts almost drew level. Williams went off his mark to catch the ball but a collision with an Esperance defender led to him losing it. The hosts had managed to score but the VAR check disallowed the goal to keep Downs ahead.
On the 85th minute, Masandawana went down to ten men after Grant Kekana was sent out by the referee after a dangerous foul on the opponent as he tried to make a clearance.
Ten minutes were added into play and Esperance dug deep to find a goal to level matters but the Downs defence kept it tight at the back. In the end, Masandawana emerged victorious with the one-goal advantage.

Well done to the boyz and the technical team for the hard-fought win. We didn’t create a lot of goal-scoring opportunities but we managed to score a goal and defended really well. Sales should’ve had a goal in the first half, and after that miss I immediately started missing Lucas Ribeiro. Bryan Leon is such a goal poacher, the kind of a striker we’ve been missing, unfortunately there’s no proper supply for him from the midfielders. At some stage, I thought Sales was going to replace Ribeiro or at least get closer. The one good thing that our technical team has been doing is to balance the team, so as to refresh the players. There’s nobody who owns the position now, except for Ronwan Williams. We’re able to rotate the squad without affecting the style of play that much.
Hard fought victory,i was most concerned with the performance of Lung especially in the first half.He was always passing back, couldn’t trap the ball and always out of position when we were attacked. The boys really fought a valiant fight,Kekana, Mudau and Cupido were amazing.Leon is a real deal,i concur with Dalom that he needs to be supplied regularly because he is not lazy to run into the open space and he is too good to out smart defenders.I was very much impressed by the attitude of the boys and their willingness to win that game.I was so happy to see Mudau and Williams maturity and their reading of the when they had a discussion after the red card to Kekana and went on to the coach to advise him to make changes and happy with how the coach quickly responded, that really showed the togetherness within the team, that is team work 101.The team is on the same page, even when we beat Pirates 2-1,after the game i saw Modiba telling Chaine that the gab is to small now i then realized the boys mean business. The game is not yet won,if we can add more intensity on Saturday those guys cannot cope with us,i so wish God can bless us with the heat.
What a performance by Mamelodi Sundowns! A truly dominant display to silence and defeat Espérance of Tunisia in the CAF Champions League.
What makes this victory even more special is the man behind it — Coach Miguel Cardoso. A coach many doubted, yet he continues to prove his critics wrong with intelligence, clarity of vision, and remarkable emotional resilience. He knows exactly what he wants, and more importantly, how to achieve it.
After winning the league last season, now leading the current standings, and securing crucial victories against direct rivals like Orlando Pirates and Espérance, it’s clear that this is no coincidence — it’s leadership and strategy at the highest level.
Everything points toward another Champions League final — potentially a third consecutive one. That level of consistency is not luck. It’s the result of a disciplined, focused, and highly capable coach.
Let’s be honest — not just anyone could achieve this. It takes a special kind of mind and character.
Some may hesitate to celebrate if he goes all the way, simply because it’s not Pitso or Rulani — but success deserves respect, no matter who delivers it.
Well done, Miguel Cardoso. Respect where it’s due.
