Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies offered no let-up in the race for the Hollywoodbets Super League title against Tsunami Queens at the Groenkloof Stadium on Wednesday evening.
After smashing the same opponents by an 8-0 scoreline in the previous meeting, Downs were aiming for more of the same and the table-toppers did so in style, putting on a goal-scoring masterclass by scoring seven times against their opponents who simply had no reply to the rampant Brazilians.
Banyana Ba Style had the game wrapped up in the first half with six unreplied goals and underlined the words of Head Coach Jerry Tshabalala, who declared in his pre-match press conference that his team looked “ready for the challenge facing his side”.
Having enjoyed a superlative showing so far this term, the invincibility-chasing Masandawana were keen to extend their dominance and they well and truly delivered by ruthlessly putting their opponents to the sword.
After enduring several waves of early pressure, the Queens’ resistance was finally breached in the opening quarter of the game thanks to newly signed 15-year old wunderkind Lumka Qhekeka who marked her debut with a fine strike.
That goal opened the floodgates and not long after, the lead was doubled with Lelona Daweti finishing off a fine team move as the visitors were unable to keep up with the intensity of the clinical league leaders.
The Brazilians continued to slice through the Queens’ defence like a hot knife through butter and were duly rewarded with quick-fire strikes from Thembelihle Masibi and Khunjulwa Mali as Banyana Ba Style seized complete control of the game.
The high-energetic Masandawana continued to boss the encounter and moments later, teenage sensation Qhekeka grabbed another to further underline why she is highly regarded as a future hot-shot in South African women’s football.
The goal-frenzy Brazilians refused to take their foot off the pedal and continued to display their sheer class and blistering confidence with Captain Zanele Nhlapho scoring the team’s sixth in a completely one-sided first half.
Downs came out in the second half with their 6-0 lead and controlled proceedings yet again by keeping things neat and tidy while nullifying every attacking threat from their clearly-rattled opponents.
With time running out, Captain Nhlapho was on hand to put the icing on the cake with her second of the game and the team’s seventh as The Brazilians extended their imperious form in the league this season. The game also marked a perfect outing for goalkeeper Asa Rabalo who registered a clean sheet on her return from national team duty.
The massive victory sees The Brazilians maintain their unbeaten run in the Hollywoodbets Super League this season with 16 wins and a single draw after 17 games played. The seven-goal flurry against the Queens also means Masandawana have now scored a whopping 63 goals this season and have conceded the fewest with just eight shipped in.
