Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies showed great determination as they notched up their 17th win of the season thanks to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Copperbelt Ladies in the latest round of the Hollywoodbets Super League.
The Brazilians came into the game fresh off their 3-0 victory over the University of Fort Hare and were determined to extend their good run of form. Having enjoyed a 2-0 victory over Copperbelt Ladies earlier this season, Banayan Ba Style were determined to complete a league double over their opponents, and they did just that.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Miche Minnies leveled matters in the 41st minute. Copperbelt then scored their second before the first-half break.
After the restart, Karabo Makhurubetshi restored parity with her first goal of the season. Fit-again Daweti then hammered home a late winner to secure Sundowns Ladies’ sixth straight win.
Oratile Mokwena hailed the team’s fighting spirit and backed the team to build on the winning run, saying, “It was an intense game because they came at us every time they had the chance. Nevertheless, we showed a champion’s mentality and resilience. On a personal note, I am incredibly proud of our performance and believe we can continue to build on this winning streak.”
Malebogo Shawe was also full of praise for the clutch mentality that has become a hallmark of the team, saying, “Our ability to perform under pressure has been exceptional this season. The way we handled the challenges in today’s match is a testament to our growth and cohesion as a team. We never gave up, even when the odds were against us, and that fighting spirit is what sets us apart. I am also feeling happy to be back with the team and playing a part in helping us register an important win.”
The Brazilians have now amassed 53 points this season, courtesy of 17 wins in 20 games. They have scored a league-high 80 goals while conceding just 12 times, boasting the league’s best defense.
Boitumelo Rabale remains at the top of the Sundowns Ladies’ scoring chart with 11 goals, followed by Nthabiseng Majiya with 10 strikes. Miche Minnies has now netted nine goals, while Refilwe Tholakele has seven strikes. Andisiwe Mgcoyi now has six goals. Lebohang Ramalepe has found the back of the net five times. Salome Kekana, Asanda Hadebe, Zanele Madonsela, Melinda Kgadiete and Karabo Dhlamini have each scored three goals, while Kholosa Biyana, Regina Mogolola and Rhoda Mulaudzi have two goals apiece. Cimone Sauls, Malebogo Shawe, Bambanani Mbane, Lehlogonolo Mashigo, Khunjulwa Mali, Karabo Makhurubetshi and Lelona Daweti have each scored once.
Sundowns Ladies next travel to the United States to compete in the prestigious Women’s Cup.
