Our CCL Group Stages Target – Mosimane

Last week the Confederation of African Football confirmed the draw for the group stages of the Champions League, and Mamelodi Sundowns were drawn to face USM Alger (Algeria), Petro de Luanda (Angola) and a familiar opponent in Wydad Casablanca (Morocco).

The coach has now discussed our targets as the Brazilians aim for the quarterfinals and hopefully go all the way like they did in 2016.

“We have never been to Angola, that team always wins the league. Recently one of the Angolan teams reached the semifinals of the Champions League,” coach Pitso Mosimane said in his analysis of the group.

“When it comes to playing Wydad, maybe this time we will go to Casablanca because they always take us to Rabat. Our family members are tired of seeing us play that match. We are improving when we go there, always losing 1-0. The last time we lost 2-1, but at least we scored, we needed one goal to reach the final. So that means they are not comfortable when they play us. The way it is with reaching the last eight is that if you finish top of your group you are going to avoid the big guns, TP Mazembe, Esperance and Al Ahly. So it is important to be top of our group to avoid them. The last time we thought we would avoid one of them, but we faced Al Ahly in the quarterfinals and it was a different story. We need to win our home games and the worst we do away is to maybe draw.”

The fixtures for the group stages get underway next month.

It will surprise you how Sundowns participate in the Caf competition, already they know how to execute their goals and navigate to the last group. It is good for SA , It is good for Bafana Bafana, even the attitude of players on these tough competitions is right and there are ready. Probably they enjoy the benefits as my Captain eluded previously. Can Sundowns win Telkom for us, can they approach it with the same zest . It is a good thing for the team to bring in Competition of A class for supporters even if they get no cent out of it, that joy fuels us to push through the CAF competition, it helps the supporters cheer the team when fatigue hits them hard as they juggle around the Caf, the League and the Nedbank towards the end of the season. So the team must fuel the Supporters this time because they still have the energy and the season is still raw and fresh. We understand the priorities of the team, can our plea be considered as it can not deter them from the set targets and priorities. These competitive games helps a lot, they even help the players mindset, the league excites towards the last 8 games compared to the first 8 games because its a marathon race, only towards the finishing line where everything matters, where others move up and others down possibly forever. But as for now sicela iGame bafethu, and Compete with the same determination at Caf competition. kby

Well said coach, we need to continue our rich form in the #TotalCAFCL and I believe we can reach yet another quarter finals appearance and even go further than our last finish in the competition. Keep up the ambition guys, we can do it. ??????

You’re overrated as a coach. Why I say this? Two seasons in succession you were knocked out by Wydad Cassablanca. And in those two away games, you were simple, predictable and mediocre. A wise coach vary his game based on the opponent’s style of play. And pls! gradually introduce youngsters from your academy because surely you have ageing personnel. Not sure about average age of your players but you can see they struggle in high intensity games.

    1. Where did we struggle Member, Yes Wydad is our hoodoo team but what will the young stars do then. Member Pitso is the top coach in Africa, He is the reason Micho left Pirates he threw in the towel at the end of last season, yes we were beaten by Wydad but on our way broke many records, we beat big teams like Al Ahly 5-0. If you are a very good analyst like other level minded Supporters you will notice that after selling our top Players we started to build a team and CAF Champions league changed the format and last season we played so many games that we were playing every second day. The players were fatigued. I believe the top coach was explaining that so many times that even the dumbest person could understand. We are the only in the southern hemisphere that plays Champions league every year and proceed to the knock-out stage and we are winning the League every year, let us celebrate what the team is achieving.
