The much-anticipated clash against Cape Town City took place at the magnificent Cape Town Stadium. Few changes were made in the team that last performed in the goalless draw against TTM. Hlompho Kekana made way for Kermit Erasmus in the starting eleven, Kennedy Mweene and Promise Mkhuma took a seat on the bench in the place of Ricardo Goss and Mthobi Mvala.
Masandawana started the game with their high press and were looking to settle first. Their persistence in the first ten minutes paid off as Peter Shalulile was fouled outside the box. Up stepped Lyle Lakay and he dispatched the ball past Peter Leuuwenberg for the opener.
The Brazilians kept pushing for the second goal. Shalulile saw his shot deflected for a corner after a neat pass from Themba Zwane. Andile Jali bossed the midfield and found himself taking a shot which was saved by Leeuwenburgh. With Lakay buzzing on the left-hand side he had an opportunity to score his second for the night but saw his shot sail just past the Citizens keeper’s post. Cape Town City tried to push for an equaliser but Denis Onyango was alert to come off of his line and collect.
The second half started with a substitution as Shalulile made way for Khuliso Mudau, he was called into action when he found himself in the box, however nothing came from his efforts. Fagrie Lakay saw his header go wide of Onyago’s goal after some good play and a cross.
Keletso Makgalwa came on for Kermit Erasmus in the 80th minute and needed less than five minutes to find himself on the score sheet as he found open space after a great run from Jali and slotted in the second goal of the night.
The Citizens had a glance at goal after Mpho Makola saw his free-kick hit the woodwork. The Brazilians took the maximum points in the Mother City after a great display of football by both sides.
How we lined up:
Onyango, Morena, Madisha, Nascimento, Lakay, Jali (85’ Kekana), Coetzee, Mkhulise (88’ Mkhuma), Zwane (79’ Maluleka), Erasmus (79’ Makgalwa), Shalulile (45’ Mudau)
Subs:
Mweene, Mudau, Kekana, Maluleka, Makgalwa, Mkhuma, B. Onyango, Langerman, Domingo
Well done boys. We really played much better yesterday. It’s not easy to cone from Cape Town with 3 points and a clean sheet. Again, I was very much impressed with Rivaldo and Jali. Our defence also played very well, hence the clean sheet and a holiday for Onyango
I saw a win the moment i saw the the starting eleven, all our midfielders where comfortable on the ball,we looked like scoring whenever we had the ball, never panicked when under pressure and no aimless long balls. We should build our team around that starting eleven.I was happy to see Mkuma,Makgalwa and Mkhulise in the team, those boys are fearless and can do anything with the ball you just have to trust them and forget about their age and look at their maturity on the ball, for example it was very difficult to score that ball but,Makgalwa made it look very simple.Still waiting to see our Bafana keeper ,Goss.Special praise to AJ,RIVA MADISHA AND NASCIMENTO. Hope you saw how free flowing the teams was in the middle without Kekana. We just need to sharpen our finishing,it is a course for concern.
What a tough nut to crack is this Cape Town team. But in reality we outdid ourselves or rather should I say we outshine on the night.I didn’t expect a win in the Mother city bcoz in reality we r always second best.Gradually this train is about 2 move very fast. Thanks 2 the 3 coaches, again not 2 live under the shadow of Pitso. Jali is like an old wine.Madisha,Nascimento,Lakay,Costner u r wow.Erusmus doesn’t need any introduction he just knows what he is doing. Thanks again 2 the technical staff 4 believing in Makgalwa,Mkhulise&Mkhuma.Bit by but step by step we will be flying higher &higher.Kaboyelo everywhere we go.
Congatulations to the Sundowns family. It was nice to hear first head coach to appreciate other coaches for the good work they do at training.
The team has improved a lot especially at the back and coach Manqoba says this is work in progress. By the looks of things I forsee a bright future and I put my head on the block this boys will achieve more than what Sir Pitso achieved with us
KBY I remain
the improvement that is difficult to miss in our team now is stamping their authority which I like – no more giving other teams the ball and rely on defending – we are bossing everything now ,the way it should be .Sundowns play CAF so it should not be other teams with the ball but Sundowns ,the difference and the levels must be visible . thank you coaching stuff ,technical team and the players we sleep peacefully because of your hard work.
Nice display by our team I wonder who will stop us once Affonso,Sirino and Motupa are back, some teams will get a dozen of goals mark my words.
Madisha don’t relax boy Brian Onyango is on standby and once he take your position you’ll not get it again Mfanakithi loyamuntu is very good.
For a change our captain was on the bench which was good, Kby forever.
I just wanted to post a comment concerning Sirino! As for if he is interested to go and join Al Ahly to team up with Pitso Mosimane, i feel if the asking price is met by Al Ahly, Sundowns should let Sirino go! No doubt about his talent, he is probably the best technically gifted player in our team! One can easily see that he has been well coached though i think nowadays he has a tendency of holding on the ball unnecessarily but overall he is our best player by far! I thinks if its time to go its time to go! Players
Well done to the team. Congratulations! It must be a relief to us.The teams that always find pleasure in causing us pain and giving us the painful bite have received their share already. It feels good. These are the teams that cause a lot of negativity in our Supporters Camp. Now that my co- workers in supporting Mamelodi Sundowns are happy 😊, it feels good too. Thanks to the team and the technical team, those little performances and results can change our talks.KBY
