Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing for a heavyweight battle to come in the quarterfinals on Saturday evening against Petro de Luanda.
Masandawana had a positive start to their Continental trophy hunt as they cruised to the top 8 with some impressive performances in the group stage campaign. After finishing the round-robin phase unbeaten in six matches played, Bafana Ba Style surpassed last season’s outstanding performance when they finished top of Group B with 13 points, 4 wins, a draw and a loss in their 2020/21 campaign. Downs forward, Gaston Sirino described the latest CAF journey:
“Each season is different, we have played the previous ones well but it has not given us the chance to move on to the next phase, so we have to be more focused and play the game the way we have been doing, which is really good.”
The Uruguay international attacker has been influential in Masandawana dominant attack, he recently returned with a man-of-the-match award after putting on a spectacular performance in the Nedbank Cup. Sirino, who forms part of the squad that traveled to Luanda ahead of the weekend’s clash, expressed the need for the team to put their bodies on the line if they are to come out victorious against Petro.
“Obviously it’s going to be a difficult and different game because it’s a CAF game. There are games that one has to give one’s life, but by being united and focused on our game we can move on to the next phase.”
“We know that they are strong at home and will want to have the advantage, but we have a team that knows how to play under pressure and I think that if we use it well we will take advantage.”
Mamelodi Sundowns lock horns with Petro de Luanda in the CAF Champions League quarter-final leg 1 of 2 at The Estádio 11 de Novembro stadium on Saturday, 16 April. This match will be televised live on SuperSport Channel 209, kick off is 18H00 (SA time).
I must comments on our Technical Team for sticking with Gaston when He was low in confidence and serving humble pie to those were saying is not needed any more at Yellow Nation .great work to Technical Team and to himself Gaston
Not bad results at all
To the technical team, I think we got it wrong.
1.Mokoena was never in the game, poor passing of all the things.
2. Why did you take out Serino out of all players,
3. Why is Dereuck benched for Lebusa. I blame Lebusa for both goals, he was not marking in both goals.
We lost the game from the beach I thought De Reuck is the best man marker and then keeping the Mokoena for the better part of the game was suicidal. But in all we were beaten at our game that is possession football but this time around the opponent was very fast on transition.I suspect Lakay was beaten out of position for the better part of the game & again whatever it is Divine Lunga must be recalled to the matchday squad because there are situations where a decisive player like him is needed because Midiba wasn’t gonna make it.In all we don’t have the Divine right to win every game, let’s pick up the pieces & regroup we have another 90 minutes to play for.We know our mistakes & maybe we underestimated the opponent & maybe paid the price.VAR has it’s fair share of advantages & disadvantages, and we kind of being the victims of it.But on a fair note we should have lost the game by a bigger margin, soccer gods were by our side, possible hand ball by Onyango&the ruled out goal for offside on the other day could be a. goal considering that no Sundowns player protested for offside. We r expecting round two next week Kaboyelo I remain
The Technical team got it wrong by playing Lebusa and Mokoena.Lebusa does not attack the ball like Dereuk and Mokoena was nowhere to be found. The sub of Sirino was bad
